![]() | Ice cap in north pole is gone before 2027 September 3rd 2007 Finnish and Danish news agencies reported shocking results of Danish scientists. It seems the polar ice in north pole is melting even faster than we expected. Heres a translation from finnish news: Polar ice is melting alarming fast The Danish scientists say that the glaciers in north pole are melting considerably faster than expected. -The polar ice is now at its lowest level ever. The statistics we have in past 50-years shows that this has never happened before, says Leif Toudal Pedersen from the Denmark's institute of Technology to Jyllands-Posten newspaper. According to the satellite images theres now 40-45% less polar ice than in years 1997-2000. This means that the amount of melted ice is shocking 2,5 million squarekilometers which is 1,5 million squaremiles. With global warming, strong sea currents are also a causing melting. The currents move huge masses of ice from the reaches of Siperia to nearby Greendland, where they melt. If the melting continues with its current rate, the ice cap in north pole will vanish completely in 15-20 years. link to site with finnish version: http://www.mtv3.fi/uutiset/ulkomaat.shtml/arkistot/ulkomaat/2007/09/557972 ...and yes I had a flu while making this : ) |

![]() | Melting Arctic Sea Ice Sea ice is frozen seawater floating on the surface of the ocean. Some sea ice is semi-permanent, persisting from year to year, and some is seasonal, melting and refreezing from season to season. The sea ice cover reaches its minimum extent at the end of each summer and the remaining ice is called the perennial ice cover. The 2007 Arctic summer sea ice has reached the lowest extent of perennial ice cover on record - nearly 25% less than the previous low set in 2005. Check out http://www.desmogblog.com for more. |

![]() | Polar ice caps melting at rate never before seen All summer we've been hearing about how the Polar ice caps are melting. But now-- there is finally proof of how much shrinking has occurred. Take a look at this animation produced by CBS 11 News. As you can see, as the summer progresses, the ice cap shrinks and then finally reaches a point never before seen. The ice actually melts far enough to open part of the Northwest Passage. Scientists from around the world say it's like a spiral effect: as more ice melts, the ice around it becomes weaker and then melts at an even faster rate than before. It's something scientists say is very alarming. |
