Children also learn quiet meditation with movement as they travel the world through music based in native traditions. Miss Mellie Rainbow explores living in a world of rainbows where it is safe for children to share, be kind to each other and respectful to the world around them, including the trees, flowers, butterflies, dolphins, and all the people of the Earth. She encourages reading aloud through storybook theatre sessions which allows children to develop stronger phonetic awareness For more than two years, Miss Mellie Rainbow was the resident storyteller at Barnes & Noble Lincoln Triangle in New York City where she created magical interactive singalong storytimes for babies, toddlers, and school aged children. She is a teaching artist for Museum for African Art; performs at children's birthday parties, and was recently a featured artist for the Children's Festival during Harlem Week . Miss Mellie Rainbow has created rainbows of storytelling, and craft programs throughout the Brooklyn Public Library, and the New York Public Library Systems. She has also performed and/or conducted storytelling workshops for Carnegie Libraries of Pittsburgh, Odyssey House, Aha Learning, Hue-Man Bookstore, the Reading Team and the Henry Street Settlement. Miss Mellie Rainbow has developed and facilitated a creative peacemaking pilot program in East St. Louis , Illinois at the Katherine Dunham Centers for the Humanities Summer Workshop for Children. One of her goals has been to create an atmosphere of joy where children love to learn. . Previous to living in New York City , Miss Mellie Rainbow spent time in Phoenix , Arizona and Santa Fe , New Mexico . While in Santa Fe , her poetrydrama with song "Love Like You've Never Been Hurt" was presented at the Robins Hyder Gallery, and she was a featured artist in Pasa Tiempo, the arts magazine section of the Santa Fe New Mexican. Previously she acted as a special assistant/researcher for the legendary anthropologist, choreographer, and humanist Miss Katherine Dunham. A veteran of the United States Navy, Melony McGant graduated from Marshall University in West Virginia and is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she owned a marketing special events firm. Melony's marketing efforts on behalf of the Pittsburgh Public Schools for its Multicultural Education Campaign won the Gold Medallion Award from the National School Educators Association, and she has had recognition from several organizations including New Mexico Not Even One, a teen suicide prevention program created by the Carter Center . She is the author of the coming of age novel, "Sunshine & Olivier: A Parable of Love". The book is a story of an African American teenager with Hopi and Navajo ancestral roots, who discovers herself amidst the wonders of Harlem, and New York City during the summer of 2000. Melony also co-authored the play "Toujour Bleu: Katherine Dunham and Her Love Affair with Haiti", which was presented during the Reading Series by a celebrity cast at the National Black Theater Festival in 2005. Her poetry is included in two anthologies, the Book of Hope and the World Book of Healing, both published by Beyond Borders Press, and has also been a columnist for the New Pittsburgh Courier, and the Harlem Times. In addition to her work with Dr. Van Scott Productions, currently Melony McGant is completing a poetry collection, working on a second novel and through Miss Mellie Rainbow, creating new storytelling programs which share the value of healthy, loving communities.
