Title:
The Battle of Little Round Top (2 of 4)
Description:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Little_Round_Top The regiments under Colonel Vincent's command were the 16th Michigan, 44th New York, 83rd Pennsylvania, and on the far left, the 20th Maine; the regiment depicted in this scene of the movie. The 20th Maine was very literally the extreme left end of the Union army. If they broke and the Confederates got past, they would be behind Union lines. With Hood wounded in the fighting in Devil's Den, McLaws took command of Hood's division. The first Confederate regiments to hit the Union lines on the Little Round Top were the 4th, 15th, and 47th Alabama, and the 4th and 5th Texas. Each time the Confederates hit and were repelled, they charged up the hill a bit further to their right, intending to flank the 20th Maine. Colonel Chamberlain prevented this from happening by "refusing the line", forming an angle to the main line in an attempt to prevent the Confederate flanking maneuver.
