"Betty Co-Ed" (Rudy Vallee, 1931)

Title:
"Betty Co-Ed" (Rudy Vallee, 1931)

Description:
Betty Boop's inspiration? There's some connection (see note below) but the flapper-fatale and the poodle-girl soon parted cartoon company. This rah-rah romance is up there with the Maine Stein & the Yale Whiffenpoof songs among college anthems put in the national hit parade by Rudy and the Yankees. Music by J. Paul Fogarty; words by Rudy himself: BETTY CO-ED Flirtation is an art with Betty Co-ed, Her station quite depends upon her charms, She gets the men in rushes by well-cultivated blushes And she's happy with a fellow on each arm! Betty Co-ed has lips of red for Harvard, Betty Co-ed has eyes of Yale's deep blue, Betty Co-ed's a golden head for Princeton, Her dress I guess is black for old Purdue! Betty Co-ed's a smile for Pennsylvania, Her heart is Dartmouth's treasure, so 'tis said, Betty Co-ed is loved by every college boy, But I'm the one who's loved by Betty Co-ed! She made a wreck of Carnegie Tech and all of its engineers; She did the same at old Notre Dame, her line is good for years; Roguish eyes, telling lies, breathing sighs! Betty Co-ed has lips of red for Cornell, Betty Co-ed has eyes of Navy blue, Betty Co-ed's a golden head for Amherst, Her dress, I guess, is white for Georgia, too! Betty Co-ed's a smile for old Northwestern, Her heart is Texas's treasure, so 'tis said, Betty Co-ed is loved by every college boy, But I'm the one who's loved by Betty Co-ed! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ...Although some claim that Betty's first name was established in the 1931 Screen Songs cartoon Betty Co-ed, this "Betty" was, in truth, an entirely different character. Though the song itself may have led to Betty's eventual christening, any references to Betty Co-ed as a Betty Boop vehicle have been made in error. (The official Betty Boop website describes the titular character as a "prototype" of Betty.) In all, there were at least 12 Screen Songs cartoons that featured either Betty Boop or a similar character... http://www.answers.com/topic/betty-boop?cat=entertainment

"Maine Stein Song" (Rudy Vallee, 1930)
University of Maine students had been singing this song for a generation (lyrics by author-journalist Lincoln Colcord; music by Colcord's room-mate, Maine music major Adelbert Sprague) before the Vallee-Colcord-Fenstad arrangement (and the magic of Radio) made their school fight song the #1 hit in America--for eight straight weeks. A pretty daring number at the time, considering that it was written during Prohibition... (UNIVERSITY OF) MAINE STEIN SONG "Oh, fill the steins to dear old Maine ...

LET'S PUT OUT THE LIGHTS (AND GO TO BED) Didn't we have a lovely evening? Our party was a great success! Oh, didn't Mrs. Smith look stunning? Did you notice Mrs. Jones's new dress? What did Mr. Brown say to Uncle Benny? Just one of those things, he'd had a few too many. Sure was a hungry crowd, They didn't leave a scrap for Rover, We ...

"Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries" (Rudy Vallee, 1931)
Rudy Vallee's spot-on mimicry of dialect comedian Willie Howard (who introduced this Ray Henderson/Buddy desylva/Lew Brown number in "George White's Scandals of 1931") is one of the more remarkable aspects of this cheery depression buster. I posted Jack Hylton's version a while back, but that performance skips the well-wrought introduction: LIFE IS JUST A BOWL OF CHERRIES People are queer, they're always crowing, scrambling and rushing about; Why don't they stop someday, address themselves ...
"I Still Remember" (Rudy Vallee, 1930)
Rudy at his crooniest with Yankee cronies...Vallee's own sax work in the opening. Words by Charles Tobias--Music by Peter derose. I STILL REMEMBER I still remember the day that we met, I'll never forget--when first you kissed me. I still remember when you went away, Each letter would say how much you missed me. Just like a dream that is gone with morning light. Out of sight, I was soon forgotten. Love's just an ember with you, I can see. It's different with me, I still remember....
