GWR 6000 King Class No.6024 King Edward I

Title:
GWR 6000 King Class No.6024 King Edward I

Description:
GWR 6000 King Class No.6024 King Edward I going almost nowhere with a lot of effort. They were shunting it around so it could go up to the turntable which I only realised when it came back facing the other way. This class was built mainly to regain the GWR the title of Britains Most Powerful engine with the title having been taken from the Castle Class by the SR's Lord Nelson Class to this end the tractive effort target was set at 40,000lb against the Lord Nelsons 33,500lb beating it by a wide margin. Two other King Class engine survive No.6023 Edward II which has nearly finished its restoration at Didcot it is at 1.59 & what I think is its boiler at 2.13 in the photos video, this uncertainness it due to there being several boilers and boilerless locos in the workshop and No.6000 George V which is currently visiting the NRM from the GWR museum in swindon who got BR 9F No.92220 Evening Star in its place. This is a very short clip taken from old Standard 8 cine footage, originally shot in 1971 when ex GWR King class loco No. 6000 'King George V' had just become the first steam loco to run on British Rail metals since the ban on steam introduced in 1968. The loco is seen heading a special train to Hereford, in the vicinity of Llanfihangel bank between Abergavenny and Pontrilas. There was no sound track on the original footage.

This must rate as the most powerful combination of locomotives ever run on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. The lead engine is 92220 Evening Star which was the last steam locomotive built for BR. The second engine is a former War Department 2.8.0 which was discovered in Sweden long after all the others had been scrapped and then purchased for preservation.
