Union Railroad #8 at Camp Hill in McKeesport

Title:
Union Railroad #8 at Camp Hill in McKeesport

Description:
The Union Railroads SW1500 #8 doesn't see much travel. Even before the Riverton Bridge had its rails removed to become a pedestrian/bike bridge, this unit could often be found at the Camp Hill works in McKeesport, PA. It became a permanent resident at the plant when the bridge closed. Here, #8 is seen doing its routine job of moving cars around at Camp Hill. Video was filmed on January 16, 2009. The camera's poor focus was due to the extremely bright sun keeping me from seeing the screen on my camera, and the harshly cold temperature didn't help much either.

Union Railroad Coils and Empty Slab Racks
At Grant Avenue crossing in West Mifflin PA, mp15dcs #16 and #25 head a combination of loaded ( I assume) coil cars and empty slab racks. The coils will likely spend time at the class yard in Duquesne before departing for the Norfolk Southern interchange in Munhall, while the slabs will go back to the USS Edgar Thomson plant. Video filmed on March 14 2009. Note the Maintenance of Way equipment and old rails to the right in the foreground at the beginning. These are left over from trackwork ...
Union Railroad Coke Passing Through Dravosburg
By far the most impressive move on the Union is the coke train that runs from Clairton to the Edgar Thomson works. This up close and personal view in Dravosburg, PA is close to the midway point, give or take a few miles. Here, mp15s #28, #30, #10, #11, and #14 enter the Dravosburg tunnel with their long, heavy load. Almost as proof that the Union is not entirely against railfanning, the engineer was nice enough to blow the horn at me. :) Filmed on February 26th, 2009. This location is where ...
Union Railroad Empty Slab Train
A Union Railroad empty slab train leaving Irvin Works, headed through Dravosburg Tunnel to ET to get loaded with more hot slabs. Notice green engine #17.
Last Run of the Amador Central
A local freight railroad which ran 11.79 miles between a connection with the Southern Pacific at Ione to Martell, California, the Amador Central was run and operated by the Georgia Pacific Lumber Company. With outbound traffic of lumber and forest products, this railroad served as an important source of transportation. But in 1997, the plant and the railroad were sold, the plant was converted for particle board manufacturing, and the railroad eventually closed. We follow the last few days of ...
The Union Railroad at its Best
A perfect showcase of typical Union Railroad operations. Andye219 and I came down since we heard a loaded coke train coming from Clairton (and monlineproductions called him as well). While we didn't arrive at the Richland Ave. bridge in Dravosburg, PA in time to film the engines passing underneath (you see them for a brief second in this video later on), andye219 saw the blinking yellow signal which meant the slab train was due any minute. We got on the bridge just in time to catch mp15dcs ...
Union Railroad Brings Up Coke from Clairton, PA
The Union Railroad uses five of their blue switchers to bring up a load of coke from the Clairton Works at Clairton,PA. Video was taken near Wilson,PA and Coal Valley,PA
CSX Coal passing Camp Hill in McKeesport, PA with Interesting Cars
I'd originally come to this alley behind the police station in mckeesport, PA in hopes of filming Union Railroad SW1500 #8 switching cars at Camp Hill. When I arrived just before 5 (you can hear the bells ringing the time at one point) the gates to the plant were closed, but I did manage to catch these three CSX locos (es44ah #835, CW44AH #5104, and es44ah #833)on a train of loaded hoppers. On the end of the usual hoppers seen around this area are a line of interesting cars (starting around ...
Indiana Harbor Belt and Belt Railway of Chicago
At roughly 40 miles long, the Indiana Harbor Belt came into existence 100 years ago as a switching railroad to serve the many industries in and around Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Today it's a completely modern operation that not only offers switching and classification services but, also a bypass around Chicago for freight trains from nearly every Class 1 railroad in the region. We follow the ihb's mainline from Franklin Park to the Port of Indiana. Included are a behind the scenes look ...
End of Union Railroad Coke- Wrong Track!
On February 6, 2009, I was nowhere near being able to film the Union Railroad's coke train in its entirety. I was originally going to go to Grant St. to film the slab train but came to Richland Cemetary instead because what I assumed was a slab train was already in Dravosburg. Had I gone to Grant St. like I planned, I'd have probably had much better results, as it turned out this was a coke train coming from the opposite direction. Unusually, this train was on the track further from the ...
Union Railroad at Night
When andye219 and I came to the Dravosburg end of the Union Railroad's tunnel at 3:45 on December 23, 2008, we hoped to be able to film a slab train bound for the nearby Irvin Works. Dusk fell quickly, and after almost two hours and not a single train, we were about to leave when our patience was finally rewarded. Two mp15dcs, #31 and #19, came past with a caboose in the opposite direction. Hopefully, the next time I go to film on this line, it won't take as long for a train to come. As for ...
