![]() | Irvine, California's Toxic Waste A number of government agencies deny that the city of Irvine has big, big problems from TCE, Trichloroethylene; a toxic chemical used in the maintenance of Marine Corps jet fighters at the former at the Marine Corps Air Station. They reject the notion that the TCE has penetrated the groundwater here and as a result, is a serious health hazard for residents in Irvine, California. But large amounts of evidence tell another story. Reports from the U.S. Navy indicate that TCE contamination stemming from the Marine base at El Toro is in fact a huge issue in this part of Orange County. |
![]() | El Toro Marines Contaminated with TCE? Most Marines who served at the El Toro Marine Air Station in Orange. County, California would hardly recognize the place today. The base closed in 1999. Now it is quickly becoming a park and a new housing community. But a group of veterans that growing quickly in number, say El Toro, along with the active Marine Corps base Camp Lejeune on the east coast, are major TCE contaminant zones. TCE, Trichloroethylene, was a chemical degreaser used to clean the parts off Marine Corps jet fighters. It is believed that for years, the toxic chemical invaded the water system here. Marines have died, children have been born with birth defects, and experts like Salem-News.com's Dr. Phil Leveque, who as a toxicologist had one of the first TCE-related court cases in the U.S., says the effects of this chemical are far reaching. |

![]() | Hazardous Chemicals from El Toro Marine Base Move Beneath Ir A veil of secrecy seems to cloud and obscure the real facts behind the closure of the El Toro Marine air base. Documents from the Navy confirm that El Toro is a hazardous waste zone. It is not new information, an environmental cleanup project has been underway for some time, but the extent of the problem and the distance the toxic contamination has traveled from the base is a serious issue, particularly for the Irvine community of Woodbridge. For years, aviation crews at the base used a chemical degreaser on jet fighters called TCE that was disposed of hap hazardously, often poured straight onto the ground after use. In spite of this public information, city officials in Irvine, California, say the air station that was closed in 1999, will be a great location for a new park and housing development. |

![]() | Abandoned military base - Fort Ritchie Here is a drive through part of the abandoned Fort Ritchie, a military base on the Maryland-Pennsylvania border, and once the biggest employer in Washington County, Maryland. The base closed in 1998 as a result of the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Act. the place where Cheney was hidden immediately following 9/11. Fort Ritchie lies at the foot of Quirauk Mountain in the Catoctin Range of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The site is underlain by the Catoctin metabasalt of the Cambrian Period. In its early military days, it was called Camp Ritchie after the land was bought by the state for the Maryland National Guard. During World War II it was transferred to the U.S. Army and became the centralized Military Intelligence Training Center. It went back under state control for a time in the late 40's, but in 1948, the Army again decided it needed the post for support of the soon-to-be constructed Alternate Joint Communications Center, also known as Site R. The AJCC began operation in 1954, and supporting it was the prime mission of the post for 10 years. (Site R is the place where it has been reported that Cheney was hidden immediately following 9/11.) After some legal battles, the fort was transferred to PenMar Development Corporation and sold to Corporate Office Properties Trust of Columbia, Maryland in October 2006. |
![]() | Santa Fe 3751 clip #1 of 8 This first shot is just RR east of C.P. Bake in Lake Forrest, the Bake Pkwy. overpass is barely visible in the background and Irvine Amtrak station is in the distance. Lake Forrest drive underpass is in the foreground. Lots of helicopter noise in this one, which made us mad until we determined that we could use the chopper to tell where the train was when we couldn't see it from the freeway. Very helpful, and in the other clips the noise is not as noticeable, if at all. On June 1st, 2008 ATSF 3751 made an excursion from Los Angeles to San Diego. These 8 little video clips are of rather mediocre quality, as they were shot with a Canon Elph 5mp digital camera in video mode, but it's the only camera I've got, and they're better than nothing. The sound is pretty good, but it's nothing like hearing the thunder in person! We chased the ATSF 3751 from Irvine to San Diego and back, 13 hours worth, and managed to get 8 fantastic run-bys... All on uphill grades to really hear the engine working (It pays to know the territory... I run on it!). |
