 | New U.S. General in Charge of Iraq ANCHOR: A change in the U.S. command in Iraq to tell you about. Head commander General David Petraeus (Pron. Puh TRAY us) is being replaced by General Ray Odierno (Pron Oh dee ERH no). Let's take a look at what this means. STORY: On Monday U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates arrived in Baghdad to mark the change in command. General David Petraeus had a term in Iraq marked by a "surge" of 30,000 extra U.S. troops and big falls in violence. Now, General Ray Odierno is faced with the challenge of ensuring security gains do not unravel... at a time when American troop levels are being reduced. He previously served as the number two U.S. commander in Iraq for 15 months until February. The U.S. defense secretary is making his eighth visit to Iraq since he took over at the Pentagon in December 2006. The United States has handed primary responsibility for security to Iraqi forces in 11 of 18 provinces. |
