![]() | Rum is meh lover http://www.thebookmann.blogspot.com/ Rum is my lover - Perpetuating a stereotype. These stills are taken from a local television show that promotes the culture of Trinidad and Tobago. Once a week or so, it slots in a chutney video count down in a cheesy commentary format. Making low-budget Soca Chutney videos as such seen on Synergy TV requires the following; Rum, a river, a beach, roll-on-roll off cars, Indian dancers in costume, wedding guests, family and friends, feuded neighbors, a iron pot for a cookup, domestic animals such as fowls (cocks) or cats (catt) and more rum to incite fights and cutlass chopping. Rum is meh lover and I don cyare, so we drinking today and we drinking forever, ah Tequila or Beer (akela hoon main) But I don cyare what people say, Ah drinking today and we drinking forever, akela hoon main Rum kill meh muda Rum kill meh fada Rum kill meh whole family Rum kill meh broda Rum kill meh sista Now it want to come and kill me But I don cyare what people say, oh ah drinking today and ah drinking forever, ah akela hoon main It has been brought to attention that the lyric akela hoon main means (I am alone) The star Ravi Bissambhar from the short video clip is a bit of a celebrity himself, and as he was interviewed by the VJ, a older woman kept accosting him then uttered the words, "I want to rape yuh." One wonders why it was not edited out. The whole idea of promoting alcoholism with East Indians equals the vulgarity of mainstream music which perpetuates the stereotype of young black men and women. ![]() | Chutney-Reggaeton: Rikki Jai - No Hablo Espanol "Chutneyton?" Another big genre-busting tune ("chune!") by Indo-Trinidadian artist Rikki Jai fusing Reggaeton and Soca-Chutney. Reggaeton with that Indian spice make it so so nice! Considered one of the pioneers of Soca-Chutney music, Rikki Jai has been in the scene since the mid 90s and arguably is the Chutney artist with the biggest crossover. For those of you who are uninitiated in the genre, Chutney is the dance music of the Indo-Caribbean Desi diaspora. A unique fusion of Soca, (as well as Reggae and Dancehall sometimes) with traditional Indian music, Bollywood music and Bhangra. Bit of background for those new to these genres, Chutney is the dance music of the Indo-Caribbean Desi diaspora. A unique fusion of Soca, (as well as Reggae and Dancehall sometimes) with traditional Indian music, Bollywood music and Bhangra. Crossing cultural boundaries to be hugely popular in both the Caribbean and the Indian diasporic communities in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica and their communities in America, Canada and the UK, the Chutney music is a highly influential musical genre that evolved alongside Soca. Even today, it provides a strong musical musical influence on Soca and Dancehall Reggae. Reggaeton is the fusion of Spanish music with Reggae beats, first popularized in Panama, and now popular all over the world. A lot of Reggaeton's original roots can be traced back to Soca and Chutney music, and this song seems to be a nice homage to that. The unique fusion of these two genres is paralleled by the recent experimentation by Reggaeton and Indian artists of Indian-Reggaeton fusion (see Daddy Yankee's Mirame, for example), or Reggaeton-Chutney mixes (like chutney singer D'Hitman and reggaeton singer Fito Blanco's collaborative hit Pretty Girl) often called "Bhangraton", even if the songs aren't necessarily Bhangra. |

![]() | Funny! -- Chutney Music meets Classical Indian Music Here's a hilarious little clip I found of Chutney Music (by Indo-Guyanese Chutney musician Terry Gajraj) VS Indian Classical Music (by Pandit Ramesh Deochand and Trevolta Karan.) Seems to be from some Natak or concert in New York. Answers the question: What would happen if Chutney lyrics were transported to ancient India? Hope no one is offended. It's all in good fun, and is a homage to both Indo-Caribbean and Indian culture ;) Bit of background for those uninitiated in the genre, Chutney is the dance music of the Indo-Caribbean Desi diaspora.
