Making low-budget Soca Chutney videos as such seen on Synergy TV requires the following; Rum, a river, a beach, roll-on-roll off cars, Indian dancers in costume, wedding guests, family and friends,feuded neighbors, a iron pot for a cookup, domestic animals such as fowls (cocks) or cats (catt) and more rum to incite fights and cutlass chopping. One wonders why it was not edited out. The whole idea of promoting alcoholism with East Indians equals the vulgarity of mainstream music which perpetuates the stereotype of young black men and women. Reggaeton is the fusion of Spanish music with Reggae beats, first popularized in Panama, and now popular all over the world. A lot of Reggaeton's original roots can be traced back to Soca and Chutney music, and this song seems to be a nice homage to that. The unique fusion of these two genres is paralleled by the recent experimentation by Reggaeton and Indian artists of Indian-Reggaeton fusion (see Daddy Yankee's Mirame, for example), or Reggaeton-Chutney mixes (like chutney singer D'Hitman and reggaeton singer Fito Blanco's collaborative hit Pretty Girl) often called "Bhangraton", even if the songs aren't necessarily Bhangra. |
