![]() | Bison-Largest, Powerful, Cute Calves, Fight, Mate Rare The Bison, also called the American Buffalo, is the largest North American land animal. The bull can weigh more than a ton. This video shows huge bison demonstrating the fighting, digging, foraging, and mating behavior shown by these animals. This video is unique for several reasons. It may be the only video of bison mating. Very few videos exist of bison fighting. The bison is the largest land animal in North America. They can reach up to 2 meters (6.6 ft) tall, 3 meters (10 ft) long and can weigh 900 to 2,100 pounds (400 to 1000 kg). The largest individuals on record have weighed as much as 2,500 pounds (1,130 kg). The heads and forequarters are massive, and both sexes have short, curved horns, which they can use in fighting for status within the herd and for defense. The American bison (Bison bison) is a bovine (related to cattle) mammal, also called the American buffalo. Two subspecies exist, the plains bison (Bison bison bison), which is distinguished by its smaller size and more rounded hump, and the wood bison (Bison bison athabascae), which is distinguished by its larger size and taller square hump. The wood bison is one of the world's largest species of cattle, surpassed in size only by the massive Asian gaur and wild Asian water buffalo. They are a keystone species-a force that shaped the ecology of the Great Plains. America's first thoroughfares were bison and deer traces, including the Cumberland Gap. Today's bison came from a few individuals that survived the slaughter of the buffalo. Once huge herds roamed the country. The animals are dangerous, and considered among the most dangerous of park animals. They will attack people if provoked. They can easly outrun humans and can run as fast as 35 mph. In Yellowstone, over 4 times as many people were killed or injured by bison, than by bears. As shown in the video, bison escape easily. Although they are large and don't look like they can, they have the ability to leap over a standard barbed-wire fence. I didn't have the camera turned on in time to catch the escapee jumping the fence. |
![]() | Chimp, Bonobo, Gorilla, Orangutan, Siaman-The Great Ape The video shows a comparison of the 4 great apes and the gibbon. The Chimpanzee, Bonobo, Orangutan, and Gorilla are considered the great apes and the Siamang and Gibbon are among the lesser apes. The gorilla is shown probing for food, a common behavior of the gorilla. ***The Chimpanzee -Chimp or Common Chimpanzee- (Pan troglodytes) is the species, with the bonobo, considered the most closely related to humans. They can weigh up to 155 lbs and stand up to 4 feet tall. Like people, they have long lives. For example Cheeta, the star of the movie, Tarzan, is 75 years old. They are native to Africa and four subspecies exist. They are highly intelligent, make elaborate use of tools, and can use language. A chimpanzee named Washoe learned up to 800 signs in American Sign Language. Researchers into chimpanzee language include Sally Boysen, Ohio State University, (who has taught chimpanzees to communicate using a computer), Noam Chomsky, and David Premack. Although chimpanzees are shorter than most people, they are much stronger. The average Chimpanzee has over 5 times the upper-body strength of a human male. A chimp, even a young one, can easily overpower a grown man. ***The Bonobo, also called the Pygmy or Gracile Chimpanzee (Pan paniscus) belongs to the species (with the common chimpanzee) that is most closely related to humans. Its DNA is 98% identical to that of humans and some researchers think they should be classified with the human species, i.e., Homo paniscus. Bonobos have relatively long legs, a matriarchal cultural, and are generally considered frugivorous. They often walk upright and have a human-like appearance. Frans de Waal, one of the leading primate researchers, has stated that the bonobo is capable of empathy, kindness, altruism, and compassion. E. Savage-Rumbaugh and Roger Lewin have extensively studied the ability of the bonobo to learn language. Kanzi has learned over 3000 spoken English words and around 400 lexigrams. He can understand simple grammatical sentences and possibly invent new vocal sounds. The bonobo is also an accomplished tool user. Many consider the bonobo to be the most closely related of all animals to people. The bonobo has been presented as a stand-in for what human ancestors of only a few million years looked like. The bonobo is remarkably intelligent. ***The gorilla (gorilla gorilla) is the largest of all living primates. These African apes are divided into two species and 4 or 5 subspecies. Their DNA is 97-98% identical to that of humans and they are considered the next closest relative after the chimpanzee. Gorillas can be over 6 feet tall and weight over 500 lbs. They are highly intelligent. Some such as Koko have been taught a subset of sign language. They use tools for a number of purposes. Colo in the Columbus zoo is over 50-years old and the first gorilla born in captivity. ***The Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) consists of two species of great apes native to Indonesia and Malaysia. They have orange/reddish hair and long arms. They are the most arboreal of the great apes and each night they fashion nests in which they sleep. They can grow to almost 6 feet tall and weigh over 260 lbs. Like other apes, they are remarkably intelligent. They use tools regularly. According to researcher, James Lee, orangutans are the world's most intelligent animals other than humans. They have great learning and problem solving ability. Some think they have greater problem solving abilities than chimpanzees. They demonstrate language capability, can play computer games, and have a complex culture. ***The gibbon, a lesser ape, lives in the forests of southern Asia. They mainly live in trees and are Black, beige, and sometimes Black with white facial hair. They sing loudly in the morning in a chorus of very loud whoops and shrieks. They are called the lesser apes because they differ from the chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos, and orangutans. In the early morning and late afternoon pairs of gibbons sing duets. The female sings the major part of th song knows as a "great call." It begins with melodious whooping and climaxes in a high pitched babbling. The male gives simple hoots. ![]() | GIANT CHIMPANZEE, HUMAN-SIZED, MYSTERIOUS NEW SPECIES PART 1 Comparison of Giant Chimpanzee and common chimpanzee. At the beginning of the video, Kermit is the one on the left. Daryl, the smaller lighter faced chimp who is the one swinging, is a common chimpanzee. Kermit may be a giant chimpanzee. His appearance differs from most other chimpanzees. Not only is he larger, but his face is somewhat darker. He has a greyish beard. Kermit is very intelligent. Perhaps when he places the yellow chair in front of him (in part 3) and applauds, he is communicating the idea that he understands the situation that he is in. Although Kermit is much larger, Daryl is said to be more dominant. This might suggest that the Giant Chimpanzee has a more docile disposition than the common chimpanzee, which is quite aggressive. Perhaps the Giant Chimpanzee has a personality more closely resembling that of the bonobo. A mysterious, new human-like ape has been documented by primatologists. It lives in the northern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (in central Africa). It is highly elusive and lives in difficult to reach areas, thus, little is known about it. It has been reported that these apes, which sometimes walk upright, can stand up to 6-feet tall and to have 14-inch feet. They have the large body of the gorilla, but their face is flatter and more that of the chimpanzee. They seem to be a chimpanzee having the size and behavior of a gorilla. They sleep on the ground like gorillas, but eat a diet mainly consisting of fruit, as does the chimpanzee. When the moon rises and sets, these large animals hoot at it. This behavior has not been seen in other primates. The apes are gorilla-like animals having chimpanzee behavior. It is unknown whether this is a new species of ape, or a new species of chimpanzee. Some have speculated that it might be a cross between the chimpanzee and gorilla, although it is unknown whether the chimpanzee and gorilla can breed. Thus, it might be an undiscovered genetic relative of humans. Some reports have called the animal a biped and say it often carries things in its hands. The animals have been described in the International Journal of Primatology and the UK magazine, New Scientist. It is unknown wither Kermit might be a member of this species. If so, he may be the only captive member in existence. Genetic DNA studies are planned. He is highly intelligent and observant. His interest in the man's electronic instrument at the beginning of the video is evident. He motions visitors up so he can check their clothes and is especially interested in foot ware. He puts on a good display for his audience. Note his very expressive face and interest in his surroundings. He weighed 300 lbs. and was very muscular, as can be seen. Unfortunately to the dismay of the researchers (who chained themselves to the compound fence) and everyone else, Kermit and the other chimpanzees were moved to another facility. Kermit died there soon after the move. This is a great loss, not only to science, but to the researchers, and his many human and animal friends. The video was filmed at Dr. Sally T. ![]() | Space & Aviation -100 Years of Exploration, Purdue Universit Purdue University is a leading pioneer in the amazing promise of space exploration. It has produced so many astronauts that it is called the Home of the astronauts. It has produced 22 graduates selected as NASA astronauts. Neil Armstrong was the world's first to set foot on the mood and and Eugene Cernan was the last. Purdue alumni have flown on more than one-third of all manned U.S. flights. Gus Grissom flew in Project Mercury in 1961; Neil Armstrong, Eugene Cernan, and Grissom in the Gemini program in 1965 and 1966; and Armstrong and Cernan in the Apollo program from 1969 to 1972. One of the original seven NASA astronauts, Virgil Gus Grissom made a 15-minute suborbital flight aboard the Mercury 4 capsule on July 21, 1961, which made him the second American in space. Grissom, fellow Purdue alumnus Roger Chaffee, and Ed White made the ultimate sacrifice when a flash fire consumed their Apollo 1 capsule during a simulated launch at Cape Kennedy, Florida on January 27, 1967. When the space shuttle came into use, Charles Walker, in 1984, served as payload specialist on Discovery. John Blaha, in 1996, and David Wolf, in 1997, were two of the seven Americans who flew on the Russian space station Mir. One of the two female Purdue astronauts, Janice Voss served on STS-99, Endeavour, in February 2000 on the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, which was done to mapp more than 47 million miles of the Earth's land surface. Mary Ellen Weber was both a medical officer and a primary contingency space walk crew member during Discovery mission STS-70 in July 1995. On October 27, 2007 the Neil Armstrong Hall was dedicated as a gateway to engineering research and education. Sixteen of its astronaut alumni attended. The building represents a gateway to the College of Engineering and a new gateway to the university is under construction by the new building. Purdue University has been involved with flight. The first Purdue graduate to become an aviator received flight instruction from Orville Wright himself. Purdue's School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, which has been ranked as fourth in the nation, has awarded more aerospace engineering degrees than any other in the country. Purdue University has its own airport¬the second busiest in Indiana. Purdue Astronauts: Neil A. Armstrong, John E. Blaha, Roy D. Bridges, Jr., Mark N. Brown, John H. Casper, Eugene A.
