At roughly 40 miles long, the Indiana Harbor Belt came into existence 100 years ago as a switching railroad to serve the many industries in and around Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Today it's a completely modern operation that not only offers switching and classification services but, also a bypass around Chicago for freight trains from nearly every Class 1 railroad in the region. We follow the IHB's mainline from Franklin Park to the Port of Indiana. Included are a behind the scenes look at the Harbor Belt's Hammond shops, and Gibson and Blue Island Yards. The Belt Railway of Chicago's six Alco Century C424s are now gone. By 1999, the BRC decided it was time to remove their C424s from active service. We look back at the C424s as they plied the rails around Chicago. And finally we'll visit Blue Island, one of the busiest rail junctions in Chicagoland. For sheer volume of train activity, Blue Island has to rank among the top. Trains belonging to Metra, the Grand Trunk Western, B&O Chicago Terminal, and the Indiana Harbor Belt pass through this busy junction.

 | Two trains on the BRC!!! CSXT 204 slowly takes a manifest into the BRC yard at Columbus (SW Highway). This is not far from 75'th and Western. In the background, you can hear CSXT 7623 and 8585 take off. Toward the end, you can see the axles from the C40-8 under the train. This railroad crossing is highly unusual. It features 12X24 Safetran LED lights, two old Griswald cantilevers, a very old RACO M-bell, and a new looking (which is weird altogether) Safetran Hybrid M-bell. The location is Diversey Parkway and North Lakewood Avenue. On January 2, 2007, shortline Chicago Terminal took over operation of this former milwaukee Road branchline.  | Vintage CSXT in Ohio and Chicagoland Railroads 1988 First off we are at Sterling, Ohio on the old Baltimore and Ohio Railroad mainline to that runs between Chicago and Newcastle, PA. Sterling was a junction with the line that ran down to Warwick and also at one time the Erie Lackawana. mainline crossed at grade and was controlled by a tower.  | Union Railroad #8 at Camp Hill in McKeesport The Union Railroads SW1500 #8 doesn't see much travel. Even before the Riverton Bridge had its rails removed to become a pedestrian/bike bridge, this unit could often be found at the Camp Hill works in mckeesport, PA.
