Southern Illinois "inland hurricane" May 2009
Description:
Recently Southern Illinois counties Jackson, Williamson, and Franklin was deamed a disaster area after some severe weather. National Weather Service called it a "inland hurricane". I work as an EMT and was at work during the storm. I caught it at it's peak on video. The junk flying around is debre from a house next door to our station in Marion that recently burned down. You see me run out to the end of the building to get closer but then I sensed something fly to close to my head. We're used to tornados around here but nothing like this. The fastest wind speed was clocked at 109 MPH. Homes and cars all over were damaged, power outages for many days and thousands of trees pulled right out of the ground.
