The body of the latest Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan arrived home Thursday. The sombre memorial for Pte. Alexandre Peloquin was held at CFB Trenton and was attended by family members and dignitaries including Governor General Michaelle Jean, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, Laurie Hawn and Chief of the Defence Staff, General Walt Natynczyk. The 20-year-old soldier was killed Monday by an explosive device during a foot patrol in the Panjwai District. Peloquin had arrived in Afghanistan six weeks ago to begin his first tour of duty. He was a member of 3rd battalion, Royal 22nd Regiment Battle Group, serving with the 2nd battalion of the Quebec-based regiment in Panjwai District. Peloquin was raised in Brownsburg-Chatham, Que., a small town in the Laurentians. His death brings the number of soldiers killed in Afghanistan to 119 since the mission began in February 2002.
