Hydraulic Jump at Center Hill Dam, Cookeville, TN

A friend and I took a trip to Center Hill Dam to admire the Corps of Engineers' handy work. Being civil engineers ourselves, we thought this was pretty cool. This short video shows the hydraulic jump at the bottom of the dam. Hydraulic jumps happen when water at a high velocity discharges into a pool of lower velocity. Here, the water is coming through gates at the bottom of the dam and is hitting a concrete ramp under the water that causes the jump. This keeps the water from eroding the river channel downstream of the dam. But that's all engineering talk. Fact is, it looks pretty sweet.
