I was sleeping soundly on the morning of Saturday, March 15, 2008. At about 9:00 a.m. this siren woke me up, so I grabbed my digital camera, and recorded the siren, since I know there's a "Siren Fan Club" on YouTube. Not to worry, I wasn't in any danger, the storm was south of me! This siren is a "Whelen." Don't know anything else about it, but at 1:25 when it goes off, wait 30 seconds until it reaches 2:05 then you'll hear "the voice!"

I figured, ok, they're gonna sound just once and the warning will be over. Well, they sounded 5 or 6 MORE times in the next hour and a half. Georgia was battered with tornadoes. Vinton tests their Whelen sirens (Three of them, all model WPS-2807) every Saturday. This is video of the siren located near the corner of C Avenue and 17th Street being tested. This is the monthly test of an older Whelen WPS-4004. It is located in a rural area along a rarely-traveled county highway about four miles northeast of Vinton. This siren is part of the Duane Arnold Energy Center siren system. The DAEC is Iowa's only nuclear power plant.
