AFP June 01, 2009 07:52pm .UPDATE 7.18am: BRAZIL'S Government has confirmed that debris spotted in the Atlantic Ocean is from a missing Air France flight. Defence Minister Nelson Jobim told a media conference in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday that "there are no doubts'' that jet fuel slicks and debris, including a seat from a plane, were from flight AF 447, which had been flying from Rio to Paris early on Monday when it went missing. The plane was carrying 228 passengers. The debris was scattered over a five-kilometre area, he said, "confirming that the plane fell at this spot''. Jobim said three merchant vessels were in the debris zone and the first of several Brazilian navy vessels would arrive early today. "They will start the work to recover these items that were spotted'' early on Tuesday by Brazilian air force planes, he said. If any bodies were found, they would be transported by ship to the nearest airport, on Brazil's archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, 460km away. From there, they would be flown out on air force planes, he said. A French research ship equipped with two mini-submarines is also on the way to a the stretch of ocean where the plane is thought to have crashed. The Pourquoi Pas will join the hunt currently being carried out by French and Brazilian air force jets hundreds of kilometres off the Brazilian coast, the ecology ministry said in a statement. The mini-subs it carries can work at depths of up to 6,000 metres. The ocean area where the plane disappeared has maximum depths of 4,700 metres, French naval experts said. The black boxes aboard the missing Air France jet can survive as deep as 6,000 metres underwater and emit a signal for one month, according to French air disaster investigators. The Pentagon also sent search and rescue teams yesterday. Air France's flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris went missing on Monday morning with 228 passengers and crew on board. There was no distress signal received from the plane. The TAM pilot reported having seen "orange-coloured spots'' that might have been burning debris. The sighting took place at about the same time that Air France Flight 447 vanished from radar. Experts are divided on whether a lightning bolt brought down the Airbus. Passenger jets are hit by lightning every 1000 flying hours - on average twice a year - and experts say the risk from the bolts of electricity is growing. But technical experts, astounded like everyone else by the disappearance of an Air France jet in the Atlantic, say lightning alone could not have caused it to crash into the ocean. Air France has said the A300-200 jet was probably hit by lightning as it passed through a violent storm on the flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. Almost every commercial pilot has a tale of coming through a lightning storm. The French national office for aerospace study and research (ONERA) says that on average a plane is hit by lightning every 1000 hours it is in the air. Lightning could cause a mechanical problem, it could pierce the aircraft, but usually it can continue to fly, said Vincent Fave, an expert airline accident investigator told AFP. Yves Deshayes, of the French national airline pilots union (SNPL), said a lightning strike could damage a plane's communications and navigation systems. But in a plane the systems are doubled, even tripled, so a lightning strike that threatens the security of a flight, and even the state of the aircraft, is extremely rare, he said. Deshayes suggested that a lightning strike could explain why there was no radio contact with the Air France plane. Meanwhile, Qantas has defended the safety record of the Airbus A330 in the wake of the disappearance. The Air France A330-200 lost overnight is the first A330 out of more than 600 that are in service around the world to crash, claiming the lives of all onboard the aircraft. The missing jet, which carried the serial number 6060, was delivered to Air France in 2005 and underwent a routine service only last month.
