Benedict Arnold - Cherry Street, Middletown, Connecticut
Title:
Benedict Arnold - Cherry Street, Middletown, Connecticut
Description:
This is Dekoven Drive in Middletown, Connecticut. Maps from the early 20th century show that the section of Dekoven Drive that connected lower Washington Street to Ferry Street was once a stand-alone strip called Cherry Street. I'm not sure that this is the exact same Cherry Street where the Sage home was located because maps from the early 19th century seem to locate the street in a slightly different, more diagonal position. The following info is from a Sage family history website... "Gen. Comfort Sage served with George Washington at Valley Forge and he was also an early friend of Benedict Arnold. When Benedict Arnold was found to be a traitor, maddened crowds swarmed Middletown and hanged Arnold in effigy. During the excitement, Gen. Comfort Sage hid Benedict Arnold's two small sons in his home on Cherry Street to protect them from mob violence. Comfort Sage remained a close friend of George Washington, and many years after the war, he entertained Washington at his home in Middletown." I shot this clip looking south to Washington Street from the bottom of Ferry Street. Across the highway (RT. 9) you can almost make out the Connecticut River.

Then we see the plot of land from the same spot as it looks today. Mike, the owner of the house, told me his parents bought the land after a Victorian house located there burned down, he's not sure when, but probably in the forties or fifties. Obviously that was not the Arnold house, which existed there before Arnold's father bought it in 1739. He ... |

![]() | Benedict Arnold - Carrying Place, Maine This is a clip of East Carry Road roughly along the path Arnold took from the Kennebec River to the Dead River during his invasion of Canada in the fall of 1775. I believe it's closer to the west carry pond than the east, but I'm not sure. I stopped my bike to wait for a female moose to leave the road, which took a few minutes. I was getting a little nervous because the sun was going down fast and this old dirt timber road was getting worse. I was also a little apprehensive about running ... |
