![]() | Igneous Rocks http://www.tmwmedia.com/physical_geography.html The third classification of rocks are those which were formed deep in the earth's crust by melting and then recrystallization. These rocks include volcanic rocks, igneous rocks of dykes and sills and plutonic rocks such as granite, syenite, gabbro and ultramafic rocks. Many specimens are discussed that are not often found in classroom labs or textbooks. Watch an excerpt from this fascinating and informative video from TMW Media. |

The entire Rift Valley has volcanism. •Transform fault -- no mountains and no volcanoes but earthquakes are produced. It's the result of plates sliding past one another. These intense earthquakes occur mostly in the deep ocean basins. But sometimes they come on the continent -- San Andres Fault one example 700 miles long. •Animation showing the transform fault movement. •San Francisco earthquake lies along the San Andreas fault. •Footage of the 1906 earthquake •Entire city was destroyed |
![]() | Structural Geology Research with Dr. Randy Merrett Dr. Randy Merrett is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas. Dr. Marrett's research concentrates on deformation processes in the upper continental crust where folds, faults, and opening-mode fractures are the most important products. This work is applicable to a wide range of human concerns such as natural hazards (e.g., earthquakes, volcanoes) and the flow of fluids through rock (e.g., hydrocarbons, water, contaminants). Some common themes that relate his disparate interests are quantitative field observations and analysis, especially using techniques that address spatial and size scaling of structures. Dr. Marrett currently has on-going projects that address active faulting and geyser eruption patterns in the Central Andes of Argentina and Chile, detachment folding and curved orogenic belt development in the Sierra Madre Oriental of Mexico, and opening-mode fracturing in numerous areas. |
