![]() | Global Treasures COLOSSEUM Amphitheatrum Flavium Roma, Ital GTR-DVD-1014 - COLOSSEUM Roma, Italy The Coliseum of Rome is the most monumental and impressive amphitheatre in the world. It is estimated that its construction began in the year 72 AD and it was here that the Roman's desire for outrageous performance and violent entertainment were fully satisfied. The massive interior of its oval grounds could seat 70,000. Surrounded by tranquillity as though within a city wall, the Coliseum is a dominant focal point among the Roman hills. A gorge-like labyrinth of walkways and subterranean chambers descends deep into the earth, formerly occupied by gladiators, slaves and caged animals ready for the slaughter. Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. ![]() | 7 Days TOSCANA Italy Tuscany 7DY-DVD-108 - Florence is the capital of Tuscany and at the end of the 14th Century was ruled by a few leading families who not only financed churches but also competed in building magnificent palaces. Of these, the Medici family proved to be the most powerful. It is a city of art and joie de vivre and past home of important artists and sculptors such as Donatello, Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci, plus the writers Dante and Boccaccio, not to mention the scientist, Galileo Galilei. The most modern of the Tuscany spas was built in the valley below Montecatini Alto which can be reached on a rack-railway which climbs to the top of the mountain through orchards and fields. Lucca, one of Tuscany's most important historical towns, rises from the lower reaches of the Serchio river, on a former swamp. Dating from the Middle Ages, it is surrounded by a massive brick wall which helped the town retain its independence and also protected it from the floodwaters of the Serchio. The precarious imperfection of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is in stark contrast to the grandiose palaces and religious buildings of the Medici family and the natural contours of the hills. The Cathedral, Bapisterium and Campanile form a unique, grandiose harmony and display the liberal mindedness of those who were in power during their construction. Olive groves and vineyards line the gentle hilly landscape around the picturesque, Vinci. The birthplace of Leonardo is a simple farmhouse above the square in which only a modest bust portrays this universal genius. Surrounded by the cities of Florence, Siena, and Pisa, Certaldo is a Middle Age village built of red brick and was the birthplace of the author, Giovanni Boccaccio. The heart of Tuscany lies around the provincial capital of Siena, a Gothic city of great artistry. The entire structure, its squares and streets, most of the residential quarterand noble palaces, the cathedral and the church, date back to the 13th and 14th centuries. History and culture combined with the beauty of nature...Tuscany has it all! |
![]() | Global Treasures The Forum of Rome GTR-DVD-1038 - The area of land in which Rome's famous Forum Romanum is located was once an overgrown swampland. Many ancient relics are scattered around what was once the heart of the mighty Roman Empire that for so long dominated Europe. Since the beginning of the 3rd century, the majestic and impressive Septimus Severus Arch has maintained its function as an architectural expression of triumph. Within the interior of the Kurie with its two side pedestals, was the seat of the Roman senate in which there was room for three hundred senators who had been democratically elected by the people. Huge buildings such as the Maxentius Basilica, named after the emperor, Constantine, are still recognizable today. It was only at the beginning of the 19th century that interest in ancient Rome returned with well-organised archaeological excavations. From 1898 archaeologists worked their way through to the oldest and deepest foundations and with these new discoveries the ancient character of the Forum Romanum as the centre of the Roman Empire was returned to the glorious light of day. ![]() | Global Treasures ÉRICE Sicily, Italy GTR-DVD-1204 - On a mountain summit seven hundred and fifty metres above the Mediterranean is Érice, the ancient town of Eryx. The well-fortified walls of its fortress once protected one of the oldest cities in Sicily. According to legend the Trojan, Aeneas, son of Aphrodite, established a town here after fleeing from the Greeks. First the goddess of love, Astrarte, was worshipped here followed by the Greek goddess Aphrodite, and then Venus who was worshipped by the Romans. Thus this location became a kind of 'love mountain' and a popular destination especially with male pilgrims as it no doubt appealed to their more romantic nature. The medieval city centre of Monte San Guiliano, as today's Érice was named by the Normans, has for many centuries remained almost unchanged. From the fortress, the Castello, there are clear views of the Sicilian coastline and Trapani Harbour, and far out across the Mediterranean. Beneath the walls of the fortress, in the 20th century Érice also became known as a research centre for both meteorology and oceanography. Érice is far more than just an historically rich settlement situated on a mountaintop. In the romantic ruins of the fortress above the former Acropolis, the atmosphere of ancient times still lives on.
