As you travel the northeastern edge of oregon you will pass through the Hells Canyon area. This canyon with its lava like hills and mountains, you will find the snake river carving itself through these corridors. State route 86 east out of Baker City or forest route 39 from Joseph on the Oregon side will bring you to Copperfield where the drive up the Hells Canyon begins, although the drive is on the Idaho side, the road ends at the visitors center on the Oregon side.
