Disabled pensioner beaten with brick by "Asian" gang
A DISABLED pensioner was battered unconscious with a brick after he went to confront a gang of stone-throwing teenagers. Ray Mills, aged 73, took on the 10-strong crowd outside his Birmingham home and was knocked to the floor by one of them. The retired welder, who walks on crutches, is waiting for tests on his eye to see whether his sight has been damaged and has undergone brain scans in hospital. As he recovered at his Stechford Road home today, he condemned the thugs and said: "I'm in terrible pain." He hoped that the shocking pictures of his injuries would strike the conscience of the hooligans -- understood to include both boys and girls -- and result in them contacting police. http://www.birminghammail.net/2008/06/17/have-a-go-oap-beaten-by-gang-97319-21087531/
VTP200 - Birmingham, UK
The VerTiPlex 200, or VTP200 as it's more commonly known, is a proposed 200 metre leisure and observation tower that has been designed by architects RTKL-UK to be built by ROC International in Birmingham, England. It will be located adjacent to Millennium Point and is part of the regeneration of the Eastside area of Birmingham. At an estimated cost of £95 million, it will feature external glass lifts which will be able to transport people from a 'shimmering gold base'. There will also be a hotel, café bars and restaurants. It will also feature a series of observation decks that will offer panoramic views of the city and surrounding region up to a distance of more than 33 miles. If the proposed building is submitted and approved by Birmingham City Council then it is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2010. Birmingham Tornado
Not quite the wizard of Oz - but the nearest we got in Birmingham (UK). First the sky went a murky green colour, then the trees were whipped around like bits of string. Even though hundreds of houses were damaged, injuries were minimal, it could have been a lot worse.
