Manufacturing has long been a staple of Hinsdale's economy, and paper is one of the town's most important products. In a machine shop here, George A. Long built a self-propelled steam vehicle in 1875, for which he received one of the nation's earliest automobile patents. Hinsdale Raceway greyhound race track is the only one of its kind in the region. Hinsdale is located in the scenic Monadnock Region, dotted with inns, guest houses and quality dining. Trails for both summer and winter use loop through the area. Cross country skiers can travel from Peterborough through miles of trail to the downhill ski area in Temple.
