Great Voice & Tango - (11) Nadezhda Obukhova !
Russian mezzo-soprano, 1886 - 1961; my Favorite, both for unique, exuberant 'mezzo', reaching naturally contralto and for the feeling that may be encountered only among those great Russian artists - musicians, singers. This very old 'European' tango, in Poland was first published as early as 1919, from the beginning had a character of a song rather than a dance. Engineering of this USSR-Russian recording (late 40.) is very poor and it was as much as 9 sound-trials before I finally decided to ...

A broken path - (2) Wiera Gran, 1938
A singer (1916-2007) endowed with a unique alto voice timbre as well as extraordinary intuition in rendering. Started to sing in cabaret Paradis in Warsaw in early thirties. First recordings she made at the age of eighteen. Her pre-war interpretations may be considered as indicative of fully shaped artistic personality. Unfortunately, this prosperous and so early started career was interrupted by the outbreak of the WW the 2nd . The artist crossed the gate of Warsaw ghetto and was well known ...
Lotte Lehmann - Frauenliebe und Leben Part 1
In 1928, Odeon issued a 4 disc set of Lotte Lehmann performing Schumann's song cycle, Frauenliebe und Leben. I'm uploading all 8 sides in 4 parts. If just one viewer enjoys it, that's good enough for me. It has been criticized for its salon orch. accompaniment. Also, Lehmann acknowledged that she was past her prime even in 1928 and the breathiness is apparent. Despite these weaknesses criticism would be like complaining that the Venus de Milo has no arms.

Lotte Lehmann - Korngold: Ich ging zu ihm
This selection is from the opera called Das Wunder der Heliane, by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Korngold's operas were very popular in Vienna in the early part of the twentieth century. The Stranger, a messianic figure, is thrown into prison by the Ruler, whose marriage with Queen Heliane has never been consummated. Out of pity she visits the young Stranger and symbolically gives herself to him. At this point in the drama she is brought to judgment for this action and tells her judges what ...
