Alienation and Criminal Behavior In Seemans analysis ,alienation consisits of an individuals subjectively held expectancies concerning his social world.Seeman (1959) had delineated the following five dimensions of Alienation as Powerlessness,meaninglessness,normlessness, subjective isolation and self estrangement.Nettler(1951) has defined Alienation Alienation is defined as the subjective feeling of estrangement from society and the culture it carries.In an analysis of selected factors related to alienation,Mcbride Martha Coachman(University of Georgia) found that Parental relationships are the best predictors of alienation.Parents expressing emotional distance,controlling of behavior, and environmentally trapped had more alienated children. In my previous research on Alienation which has been submitted for perusal ,the results showed that the highly alienated individuals were also Extraverts.This is similar to the interpretation of criminal behavior of Dr. H.J.Eysenck .The maladaptive extraverted individual has failed to acquire sufficiently strong fear or guilt reactions about antisocial impulses to inhibit or condition their expression.However Neuroticism factor was lesser in the extraverted ,highly alienated group. Thus I believe that people suffering from mental disorders are those who show a high degree of conformity with the society,are more introverted and repress even their natural expressions. There are lesser criminals in this group because aggression has been directed towards the self,may be more prone to suicide ;rather than homicide. According to Coleman-Usually blind conformity or non-conformity is considered maladaptive because it represents an abdication of responsible self-direction and often results in behavior at odds with the individuals own values.A choice based on rational thought and decision appears most likely to serve the long term interests of both individual and the group.
