The Amherst Comet Harriers take the win in Columbus, Ohio in the Fall of 1977. Coach Dick Cooley led the team of Doug Drew, Jim Welte, Jack Malin, Denis Schneider, Mike Sitton, Rich Kapronica and Scott Mudrich to give Amherst Steele its second ever Ohio HS State Title. Alan Scharsu of Austintown Fitch won the race and Bay Village's Chris Kohler was second, while Drew and Welte were 3rd and 6th for the Comets.

Phantom Regiment stopped by Amherst Steele High School's Field for the day on their way to Drum Corps International Championships. With their show "I am Sparticus," they won the 2008 Championships and were crowned "best drum corp in the world." This show was performed in the evening after Phantom Regiment spent a day practicing at Amherst Steele in August of 2008. They wore just their uniform tops when performing.
