Assateague Island National Seashore and Assateague Island State Park was established in 1965 to preserve the 37 mile long barrier island and surrounding waters. It is located off the eastern coast of Maryland. Herds of feral horses, ponies, sika deer and whitetails are just a few of the wild animals living on this beautiful island. Today we go to the island of blood sucking creatures and wild ponies, we go camping on Assateague Island. The island of Assateague is a great place for family fun, camping, crabbing, shellfishing, and observing wild life. When you visit the Assateague make sure before you hit the beach or check out the wild ponies you bring your insect repellent because the mosquitos will eat you alive.

1988. Assateague Island's ponies are often referred to as wild ponies. The correct term is feral, as the ponies are descendants of domesticated horses that adapted to life in the wild. These two are feeding peacefully. Do NOT attempt to feed them as some can be quite aggressive. Assateague is a barrier island off of Maryland's Eastern Shore.

We were having a picnic when a few horses decided to join us.

While Ocean City Maryland was firing with some nice barrels close to shore, Assateague Island was a smaller fun filled wave. Good enough for K Coast's own Spike Shannahan as well as Bonnie Preziosi and many other surfers.
