Nash Bargaining via Flexible Budget Markets
Google Tech Talks September 12, 2008 ABSTRACT In his seminal 1950 paper, John Nash defined the bargaining problem; the ensuing theory of bargaining lies today at the heart of game theory. In this work, we initiate an algorithmic study of Nash bargaining problems. We consider a class of Nash bargaining problems whose solution can be stated as a convex program. For these problems, we show that there corresponds a market whose equilibrium allocations yield the solution to the convex program and hence the bargaining problem. For several of these markets, we give combinatorial, polynomial time algorithms, using the primal-dual paradigm. Over the years, a fascinating theory has started forming around a convex program given by Eisenberg and Gale in 1959. Besides market equilibria, this theory touches on such disparate topics as TCP congestion control and efficient solvability of nonlinear programs by combinatorial means. Our work shows that the Nash bargaining problem fits harmoniously in this collage of ideas. Speaker: Vijay V. Vazirani Vijay Vazirani got his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from MIT in 1979 and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1983. His research has spanned a broad range of themes within the design of efficient algorithms - combinatorial optimization, approximation algorithms, randomized algorithms, parallel algorithms, and most recently algorithmic issues in game theory and mathematical economics. He has also worked in complexity theory, cryptography and information theory. In 2001 he published what is widely regarded as the definitive book on Approximation Algorithms. This book has been translated into Japanese, Polish and French. Last year, he co-edited a comprehensive volume on Algorithmic Game Theory. He is a Fellow of the ACM. |

Learning Chinese: Bargaining
Bargaining! You know that in many cultures around the world, what you pay for something depends on how well you can bargain. And bargaining expertise depends mainly on how well you understand the local language and your skillful use of terms to get the best price. Today, our hosts Will Feng and his buddy from New York, Marty, go into some shops and show you how it's done, and exactly what to say in Chinese to make a purchase you are happy with. Then Will does a little classroom repetition exercise to help you remember todays' key phrases and how to pronounce them. Cool! |

2007 UAW Bargaining Convention Uncensored (Part 1 - Parker)
After the National Anthems and a political speech, the 2007 UAW Bargaining Convention Rules Committee presented the rules for the Convention. Like the rest of those gathered inside Cobo Hall, we assumed ratification of The Rules would be a formality, so we changed videotapes . . . just as Mike Parker rose with a point of order to make. Parker proposed the following amendment to the rules for the 2007 Bargaining Convention: "The agenda for the Wednesday morning session will be Organizing to Fight Back. This session will cover how we can mobilize our members, build solidarity, resist company whipsawing and divisive strategies like Two Tier and pitting older workers against younger workers. To make time for this session, short presentation summaries will be used instead of reading the complete resolution book and guest speakers will be asked to keep their comments brief . . ." As UAW member and Soldier of Solidarity Gregg Shotwell, who was covering the convention for The Uncommon Sense newspaper put it: "Mike Parker, a delegate from Local 1700, busted the seams of uniform decorum before Gettelfinger could pound the podium." http://www.SoldiersOfSolidarity.com http://www.FactoryRat.com http://www.LaborNotes.org http://www.CenterForLaborRenewal.org **NOTE** QUALITY DOWNLOADABLE QUICKTIME FILE AVAILABLE @: http://www.archive.org/details/2007UawBargainingConventionUnsensoredpart1-Parker_886 |

Hillary Clinton uses her supporters as bargaining chips for vice president bid
Clinton supporter Hillary Rosen: "I am not a bargaining chip [for Vice President], I am a Democrat" Senator Clinton's speech last night was a justifiably proud recitation of her accomplishments over the course of this campaign, but it did not end right. She didn't do what she should have done. As hard and as painful as it might have been, she should have conceded, congratulated, endorsed and committed to Barack Obama. Therefore the next 48 hours are now as important to the future reputation of Hillary Clinton as the last year and a half have been. I am disappointed. As a long time Hillary Clinton supporter and more importantly, an admirer, I am sad that this historic effort has ended with such a narrow loss for her. There will be the appropriate "if onlys" for a long time to come. If only the staff shakeup happened earlier; if only the planning in caucus states had more focus; if only Hillary had let loose with the authentic human and connecting voice she found in the last three months of the campaign. If only. If only. I have written many times on this site about the talents of Hillary Clinton and why I thought she'd make a great President. After last night's final primary, she was only about pledged 100 delegates behind him. Ironic that after not wanting to make the decision for so long, it was in fact, the superdelegates who made the decision. But I guess they did so for another reason. It just isn't her time. It is his time. It's a new day that offers a freshness to our party that many have longed for. We felt the rush of new voices and a new energy in the Congressional sweep of 2006 and the sweep continues. It has been an organic shift. And a healthy one. The life's work of Bill and Hillary Clinton in partnering with so many African Americans uniting our purpose and promoting our mutual issues is as responsible for Barack Obama's success as our first African American nominee as anyone. And yet, that joy is being denied for them by themselves. It is so sad. So, I am also so very disappointed at how she has handled this last week. I know she is exhausted and she had pledged to finish the primaries and let every state vote before any final action. But by the time she got on that podium last night, she knew it was over and that she had lost. I am sure I was not alone in privately urging the campaign over the last two weeks to use the moment to take her due, pass the torch and cement her grace. She had an opportunity to soar and unite. She had a chance to surprise her party and the nation after the day-long denials about expecting any concession and send Obama off on the campaign trail of the general election with the best possible platform. I wrote before how she had a chance for her "Al Gore moment." And if she had done so, the whole country ALL would be talking today about how great she is and give her her due. Instead she left her supporters empty, Obama's angry, and party leaders trashing her. She said she was stepping back to think about her options. She is waiting to figure out how she would "use" her 18 million voters. But not my vote. I will enthusiastically support Barack Obama's campaign. Because I am not a bargaining chip. I am a Democrat. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/hilary-rosen/i-am-not-a-bargaining-chi_b_105133.html The desire of the party for Mrs. Clinton to leave the race was signaled — if politely as four top Democratic leaders issued a statement on Wednesday morning asking all uncommitted delegates to make their decisions by Friday. The statement from the party officials — Howard Dean, the Democratic chairman; Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker; Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, and Gov. Joe Manchin of West Virginia — stopped short of endorsing Mr. Obama, but aides said they would likely move in that direction if Mrs. Clinton lingered in the race. "The voters have spoken," they said in their joint statement released before 7 a.m., purposefully timed to set the tone for the day after the election. "Democrats must now turn our full attention to the general election." Representative Rahm Emanuel, the Illinois Democrat with close ties to Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton who had kept studiously neutral throughout the presidential contest, said in an interview that he was "coming out from my desk" to endorse Mr. Obama. "The fact is that he is the nominee," Mr. Emanuel said. He seemed quizzical at the slowness of Mrs. Clinton's decision not to acknowledge this. "You don't answer about whether you want to be about vice president unless there's no doubt in your mind that he is the nominee," he said, referring to Mrs. Clinton's initial reluctance to congratulate Mr. Obama, noting that she told supporters she would be open to be vice president, if Mr. Obama wanted her. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/05/us/politics/04cnd-campaign.html?pagewanted=2&_r=2&hp |
