Time Commanders: The Battle of Bibracte 1/6

Time Commanders is a series of programmes made by Lion TV for BBC Two. It uses an edited version of the game engine behind the real-time strategy game Rome: Total War by the Creative Assembly to recreate famous battles of the ancient world. The battles are replayed by 4-player teams from diverse backgrounds. The teams are unfamiliar with computer games, to make sure their gaming skills do not influence their success. After a brief introduction of the battle, including an overview of military units, terrain and available forces, the players have to develop a strategy and then deploy their forces. Two of the players are selected as generals, who will direct the battle and have access to a strategic map. The other two players are designated lieutenants, the units are indirectly controlled by the lieutenants, who issue commands to program assistants, who in turn use the game interface to control the units.

Bibracte

Bibracte oppidum in Gaul

Scene from the movie Vercingétorix (2001) Bibracte, a Gaulish oppidum or fortified city, was the capital of the Aedui and one of the most important hillforts in Gaul. It was situated near modern Autun in Burgundy, France. The material culture of the Aedui corresponded to the Late Iron Age La Tène culture, In 58 BC, at the Battle of Bibracte, Julius Caesar's armies defeated the Helvetii 16 miles south of the fort. In 52 BC, at Bibracte Vercingetorix was proclaimed head of the Gaulish coalition. Again at Bibracte Julius Caesar, the victor at the battle of Alesia, completed dictating his Gallic Wars. A few decades after the Roman conquest of Gaul, Bibracte was abandoned in favour of Autun, 25 kilometres distant. Without a continuous settlement to disturb or efface the site, Bibracte remained for modern archaeology to rediscover. The first excavations were begun at the site by the wine merchant Gabriel Bulliot between 1867 and 1895. His nephew Joseph Déchelette, author of a famous Manuel d'Archéologie continued the excavations between 1897 and 1907 Today Mont Beuvray is generally credited as the ancient Bibracte. The site straddles the borders of the French départements of Nièvre and Saône-et-Loire in Burgundy. The site is an archaeological park at the centre of a protected forest, and a site of cooperative European archaeological efforts, a training ground for young archaeologists as well as a centre for interpreting Gaulish culture for a popular audience. Important international excavations take place at Mont Beuvray, with teams from the universities of Sheffield, Kiel, Budapest, Vienna and Leipzig. The city also featured as the Celtic Civilization's default capital in the 2007 Civilization 4 expansion Pack "Warlords" for PC.

Gergovia - The chief town of the Arverni

Scene from the movie Vercingétorix (2001) In the first century b.C., Strabon wrote that the Arverns had extended their domination all the way to Marseille, the Pyrénées mountains, the Ocean and the Rhine river, which demonstrates the importance of the city. Gergovia, its capital, was Vercingetorix's homeland. There, Caesar experienced a painful military defeat which almost ended his Gaulish Wars. The memory of Gergovia's location was lost with time. Relatively recently, Gergovia was placed on the Merdogne plateau by Napoleon the 3rd. The plateau overlooks to the south the city of Clermont-Ferrand. This location is still considered the official site and is visited by approximately 80,000 tourists each year. A few years ago, a new thesis surfaced that received considerable media coverage in the local press and television. The thesis places Gergovia on the Clermont Hills (Côtes de Clermont), north of the town. A violent controversy ensued that involved a problem with the exploitation of a quarry in the area. Mr. Giscard d'Estaing, former French President and a local of the area, found it necessary to intervene. The parties responsible for archeology in Auvergne, in line with Christian Goudineau's thinking, have decided to minimize the importance of pinpointing the exact location of the Gergovia site, deliberately choosing to ignore the gaulish cities in favor of the valley dwellings. In 1993, Emile Mourey published a second book (see Bibliography), in which he explained the history of Gergovia by placing the gaulish oppidum and towns on the spur of the Crest, approximately 7.5 miles south of Clermont-Ferrand. This thesis is based in part on an improved translation of Caesar's text and on the author's military experience. The new findings are creating a serious problem for archeological research in France, the same problem posed by the new findings on Mont Beuvray. Until now, research has been based on the inacurrate assumption that the gaulish civilization was essential rural and scattered--with the Mont Beuvray representing a rare example of urban agglomeration, otherwise lost in the middle of the woods. The French archeologists ignored Caesar's writings, despite the fact that they referred to twenty cities in the Biturige country alone. Placing Gergovia at the Crest, in a medieval-style town, fortified and walled-in in the fashion of the Greeks, forces historians to correct their vision of History. As was the problem in the correct placement of Bibracte, the entire field of archeological research and interpretation must be rethought, in France and in Europe. But Gergovia presents another problem. If Gergovia is indeed at the Crest, then the site must be preserved, but nobody knows whether the inhabitants would be in favor of it.
