Vista Point VALLETTA Malta

VPG-DVD-216 - VALLETTA Valletta is the capital city of the Mediterranean island of Malta and is also known as The City of Palaces. It was once inhabited in turn by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Turks and in 1530 the Order of the Knights of Malta moved its main residence to this section of the island. Malta's pre-historic epoch is demonstrated by its primeval stone temples and graves. They belong to the Menhir period that extended to the British Isles. The St. John's Co-Cathedral was built in1577 by Gerolama Cassar as a monastic church of the Order of the Knights of Malta. At the command of Pope Pius the 7th, in 1816 it was designated as a cathedral and was given the same privileges as the bishop's seat in Medina, thus its somewhat strange title of 'Co-Cathedral'. Situated on the northernmost point of the peninsula is the famous Saint Elmo Fort, a dominant feature of the coast. Throughout the centuries it has been witness to many bloody battles and much courageous resistance. It reached its zenith during the time of the Knights of Saint John who expanded the fortress and made it almost totally impregnable. Its walls successfully fended off the Turks and later the French blocked off the harbour entrance to the British fleet. During the Second World War anti- aircraft artillery were positioned on the fort's upper levels to defend against both German and Italian bombers. The Orient and the Occident have both left their traces in Valletta a picturesque location carved from stone. The former City Of Knights in which the future joins with the past.

Poignant ceremony marks Remembrance Sunday, 2008

Armistice Sunday was marked in Malta on Sunday 9th November, 2008, with a moving ceremony at the foot of the Cenotaph which saw war veterans and ex-servicemen parade behind their Colours of their associations to the applause of hundreds who attended. The usually bustling area around the War Memorial fell silent as a saluting gun boomed a single shot to mark the Last Post, sending thoughts back to the muddy trenches of the First World War and the hunger and hardship of the Second. As the reveille was sounded, three Royal Air Force F3 Tornadoes of 111 Squadron flew overhead in a tight V Formation. The ceremony started with Mass at St. John's Co-Cathedral, after which the veterans formed along one side of the side of the War Memorial and an Armed Forces of Malta and Police guard of honour formed up on the other. They were joined by a detachment from the Civil Protection Department, RAF ooficers from 111(F) Squadron and Sea Cadets, among others which included a team from the British Army - out in Malta on adventure training. The AFM band drew applause as it played a number of favourites, such as "Its a long way to Tipperary" and the more sombre "They will never die", "Land of Hope and Glory" and "Abide with Me" - a prayer for God to remain present through life, through trials, and through death. President Eddie Fenech Adami laid the first wreath of poppies, followed by the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice, the Speaker and the Hon. Joe Debono Grech representing the Opposition. Wreaths were also laid by the members of the diplomatic corps, with the people applauding as they were followed by the ex-servicemen, frail but proud, medals gleaming from their chests. Vista Point MALTA

VPG-DVD-201 - MALTA Homer called Malta, 'The Centre Of The Sea'. This island situated in the heart of the Mediterranean and was important to both the orient and the occident. After the Phoenicians and the Punier came the Romans followed by the Arabs and the Normans: but it was the Knights Of Malta who made the most indelible mark here. Valletta is also known as The City Of Palaces and is Malta's main city, full of historic buildings, and in 1530 the Order of the Knights of Malta moved its main residence to this part of the island. The St. John´s Co-Cathedral was built in1577 by Gerolama Cassar as a monastic church of the Order Of The Knights Of Malta and its splendid interior was financed by the profits gained from hostilities mounted by the Order against Muslim trading ships. Mosta is situated in the middle of the island, a busy small town with a famous landmark, Mosta Cathedral, a huge sacred building whose mighty dome can be seen from almost anywhere on the island. The rugged southern coast of Malta contains small fjord-like features and numerous grottos, the most spectacular of which is the Blue Grotto. From the village of Wied-Iz-Zurrieq a steep path leads down to the sea and when the weather is suitable experienced guides take passengers on small boats through a narrow canyon into the grotto where the colour of the water is truly fascinating. One of the prettiest villages on Gozo is Gharb whose Baroque parish church dominates the main square. Here it is as though time really has stood still. With seven thousand years of history Malta is a colourful and beautiful island with tales of the sea and noble knights: a tantalising pearl set in the very heart of the Mediterranean.

Global Treasures VALLETTA Malta

GTR-DVD-1227 - Malta's past is reminiscent of the stormy sea waves that sometimes appear around the rock covered coast of this small yet remarkable island located in the southern Mediterranean. The Lower Barracca Gardens date back to British colonial times. In 1814 Malta became an official Colony of the British Crown just a few years after Napoleon's army had occupied the island. Following various wars, cruel sieges and brutal invasions the inhabitants of Malta decided to secure peace and order by becoming part of the British Empire. The glamour of the Teatro Manoel is only exceeded by the former Grand Master's Palace that is now the official seat of the President and also home of the Parliament of the Maltese Republic. Saint John's Co-Cathedral is one of the island's most prized cultural treasures. The magnificently equipped church that was built between 1573 and 1577 is regarded as being one of the most beautiful architectural creations of Gerolamo Cassar. Although the Maltese knights of Valletta have now been assigned to the history books their cultural heritage is still very much alive on this small yet fascinating Mediterranean island. Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa's Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world's heritage. Join us as we explore one of these protected monuments.

Malta Series 2 - Valletta 01/10/2008

Valletta (Maltese: Belt Valletta or Città Umilissima) is the capital city of Malta. It is located in the central-eastern portion of the island of Malta and has a population of 6,315[1]. Valletta, the Città Umilissima, is essentially Baroque in character, with elements of Mannerist, Neo-Classical and Modern architecture in selected areas. The city contains several buildings of historic importance, amongst which are St John's Co-Cathedral, formerly the Conventual Church of the Knights of Malta and home to the largest single work by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, his only signed work, and a priceless collection of seventeenth-century Flemish tapestries (alongside Republic Street); the Auberge de Castille et Leon, formerly the official seat of the Knights of Malta of the Langue of Castille, Léon and Portugal, now the office of the Prime Minister of Malta (found on the highest point of the city, above the bastions); the Magisterial Palace, built between 1571 and 1574, formerly the seat of the Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, now housing the Maltese Parliament and the offices of the President of Malta (opposite Palace Square along Republic Street); the National Museum of Fine Arts, a Rococo palace dating back to the late 1570s, which served as the official residence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet during the British era, from 1789 onwards (in South Street); the National Museum of Archaeology, formerly the Auberge de Provence (Republic Street); the Manoel Theatre (Maltese: Teatru Manwel), constructed in just ten months in 1731, by order of Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, and one of the oldest working theatres in Europe; the Mediterranean Conference Centre, formerly the Sacra Infermeria, built in 1574, one of Europe's most renowned hospitals during the time of the Knights of Malta; and the fortifications themselves, built by the Knights as a magnificent series of bastions, demi-bastions, ravelins and curtains, approximately 100 metres (330 ft) high, designed to protect the city from attack. --- From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
