After getting our fill at Horseshoe Curve on August 8, 1996 we moved to Gallitzin for our first look at the new tunnel we last saw under construction in '94. This TV train was the first eastbound we saw. The C40-8W pair came to a stop just before the bridge, giving us a great angle to record the characteristic GE chug as they started rolling again.

February 4, 2009: With two beautiful blue Conrail Dash-8-40CW's, NS 8417 and NS 8349, not to mention a great Leslie RS-3L, 19G drops off a few on the siding at Hershey and then goes back to the train to continue west towards Harrisburg. Note the Conrail caboose on the far siding, that is used by the local shifter. (For those of you who have successfully spotted a third locomotive, that is NS GP38-2 5669 in OLS paint).

So, I started putting together my Conrail Coal train and decided to test the new cars I bought plus some old cars I had on hand but had not yet converted for my needs, and well, the results were interesting. I'm looking for more Bethgons to accurately model some on Conrail's coal trains. Conrail used to run these trains in lengths upwards of 70 cars, I am currently at 16 cars that have passed the test. The corridor was sold to Amtrak in December 1975, five months before the startup of Conrail but due to the government ownership of Conrail the ICC forced Conrail to run trains on unprofitable lines (like the Corridor). As Conrail sold some it's electric power to Amtrak and others diesels pulled most of the trains. September 8, 2007: TURN IT UP! NS 540 is dead weight on a grade as full throttle tries to get it moving! Conrail SD60I NS 6728 and NS 9523 power hard. NS 540 was one of the last PPLX coal trains heading to Pennsylvania Power and Light Company's coal burning plant in Martins Creek, PA. The plant was permanently shut down September 17, a friday night. Supposedly, PPLX trains will still make a rare appearence along here with CSX loads and calls from Portland, which is not a PPL plant....
