Jennifer Ackerman-Haywood, host of the CraftSanity podcast, visits Lorilee Beltman, owner of City Knitting in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for a quick "Continental" knitting lesson. As a veteran "thrower" or English style knitter, Jennifer didn't want to pass up the opportunity to see how the other half knit. She brought her video camera along to record the tutorial for all of you.

In their 1934 film "The Gay Divorcee" Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers set the formula for their next nine movies together. The long sequence for the number "The Continental" will not fit into a ten minue YouTube clip. After much agonizing, I decided to cut out the vocal by Ginger Rogers and just upload the dance number.

Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics explores the inner earth and its surface. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the Mount St. Helen's volcanic eruption are explained and illustrated through narration and spectacular historical footage. The program also explores the theory of continental drift as well as that of magnetic north and many other phenomena. 18 minutes, color.

I produced this video to help Bentley and Motor Trend launch the Continental GT. It was a fun project as there were only two GT's in North America at the time, and I got one to play with while taping. The video was shot in San Francisco, Detroit and around England. Edited the project in Final Cut Pro in the basement of my Los Altos home. The voice over talent is David Menesh.

Continental Method aka German Method sometimes called Left Handed Knitting Officially, anyone who holds the yarn in their left hand is a Continental knitter. Some continental knitters wrap the yarn between the needles to knit it, and some simply scoop, or "pick", the yarn with the needle. The latter requires fewer hand movements, and has a reputation of being the fastest method of knitting there is. This is my preferred knitting method.

The middle finger (or index finger) is used to push the yarn down and to the right, to where the right needle can easily push it back through the stitch. This method requires the fewest hand movements of any purl method, and is consequently the fastest (with the exception, perhaps, of the "Combined Knitting Method" of purling--see below). This is the method I use in the Continental purl videos on this site. Videos where the yarn is held in the left hand, all have a pink icon. This method of purling, when combined with Continental Knitting (see my Knit Stitch Video), makes for a very fast ribbing.
