Sunday, April 26 2009, saw a forest fire outbreak occur near Cresco, Pa. The Delaware-Lackawanna railroad is nearby as well as one of the rare historical wooden stations along the line. This helicopter delivered water to douse and control the fire almost continuosly every few minutes to help save the day. Returning from the Delaware Water Gap with a 10-car excursion, Steamtown's ex-Canadian National 2-8-2 3254 battles one of the worst sections of the Pocono Mt. grade, west of Cresco PA on the former DL&W mainline. After some serious slips at the Devils Hole Rd. grade crossing, 3254 actually stalled a little further up the line and had to be rescued by the 2 DL Alcos serving as westbound protection. This was something I put together back around 1966 while on vacation in Pa. I got the idea from the popular TV series COMBAT. It starred Vic Morrow, Rick Jason, Jack Hogan and more. Two DL RS3s pull the Railfest "Whistle Stop" excursion train uphill just outside of Scranton. This train is actually deadheading to Cresco, where it will turn around and head back to Scranton, picking up passengers along the way.

The Whistle Stop train crosses Devil's Hole Road heading west. This location is between Cresco and Mt. Pocono. The train has its first group of passengers aboard from the Creso station. The train also picked up passengers at Tobyhanna, Goulsboro, and Moscow. This train was designed to be a historical re-enactment of a 1950s or 60s commuter train. Looks pretty accurate to me!
