Despotism (1946)

An Encylclopedia Britannica newsreel made to educate classrooms about political science. A facinating and frightening look at how to judge the level of freedom in your community. Very pertinent today when I believe we are on the verge of a real fruition of a movement. Hopefully, people taking a look at their lives in this kind of arbitrary analitical way will help them to wake up to the fact that we are not in fact the freest country in the world. Not anymore. Michael Jordan 1996: 48pts Vs. 76ers, "Stackhouse Game"

Drama loves company. This was one of the few statement games by the older and wiser MJ. With rookie Stackhouse mouthing off to the press about how he held his own against MJ during his summer-UNC warmup sessions, MJ was quietly enraged. To add to that, Vernon 'Mad' Maxwell was upset that the Bulls were getting so much press with MJ's return after retirement that he spewed nonsense to the press as well. It awoke the sleeping giant. With cool and calm efficiency, MJ destroyed the two in this game as their comments were unacceptable. Toying with Stack the whole game, MJ frustrated him into shooting 4-11 for 13 pts. Smothering Mad Max the other half of the time, MJ ruined him into shooting 1-8 for 4 pts. On the other end, MJ chose to hit 64% with a butter-like J to go 18-28 in 3 quarters for 48 pts and 10 rebounds. With his exploits responsible for a 30 point lead, MJ rested the 4th, iced his knees and asserted his physical and mental mastery of the game while marching his way to a record 72 win season that year. "You do not look at Michael Jordan in the eye because he'll take that as a challenge and he'll dominate you. You do not make him mad. Whenever I played against him, I just looked at the ground." (Jayson Williams, NJ Nets.)

What is Despotism?

Karl Martino points us to this fascinating 1946 classroom film on "Despotism,". This 10-minute film from Encyclopedia Britannica Films features Dr. Harold D. Lasswell of Yale, who was a professor of law and of political science at the school while both our current and our most recent presidents were students there. The film, produced in the immediate aftermath of World War II, presents a spectrum from democracy to despotism. And it begins with this cautionary note: Avoid the comfortable idea that the mere form of government can of itself safeguard a nation against despotism. ... When a competent observer looks for signs of despotism in a community, he looks beyond fine words and noble phrases. That last is shown against a backdrop of patriotic Americans reciting the (original) Pledge of Allegiance, which fades into the silhouette of a lynching. That's the implicit message of this film, It Can Happen Here. We are introduced to a man "who makes it his business to study these things" -- presumably Dr. Lasswell. The professor offers two "yardsticks" for measuring the existence of despotism or democracy in a given community or nation. The Respect Scale ranges from shared to restricted, and measures "how many citizens get an even break." The Power Scale ranges from shared to concentrated. "The test of despotic power is that it can disregard the will of the people," the professor says. It's notable that in this 1946 film, both racism and anti-Semitism are offered as examples of despotic tendencies. But here's where the film really gets interesting. The professor then offers two more scales by which, he says, an observer can determine whether a nation is headed toward democracy or toward despotism. These scales are Economic Distribution and Information. Here's what the professor has to say about economic distribution, which he measures on a scale from "balanced" to "slanted": If a community's economic distribution becomes slanted, its middle-income groups grow smaller and despotism stands a better chance to gain a foothold. ... If this condition exists over the nation as a whole, so that the control of jobs and business opportunities is in a few hands, despotism stands a good chance. ... Another sign of a poorly balanced economy is a taxation system that presses heaviest on those least able to pay. In 1946, the unjust or inequitable distribution of wealth was perceived as a dangerous tendency and a threat to democracy. The Cold War hadn't yet begun in earnest. Over the following decades, Soviet despotism rose as a challenge to democracy in the world. And because Soviet despotism was nominally about the redistribution of wealth, talk about equitable economic distribution as a necessary prerequisite for healthy democracy became suspect. And not just suspect, but condemned as anti-democratic and anti-American. Watching this 1946 film gave me a real sense of how great a setback for democracy vs. despotism the rise of McCarthyism really was. The professor's final scale, which measures information on a range from "uncontrolled" to "controlled" seems eerily prescient, forecasting the McCarthyism to come. He wasn't really forecasting, of course, he was simply describing the past two decades in Europe. A community rates low on an information scale when the press, radio and other channels of communication are controlled by only a few people, and when citizens have to accept what they are told. In communities of this kind, despotism stands a good chance. ... If books, newspapers and the radio are efficiently controlled, the people will read and accept exactly what the few in control want them to. Despotism (1946) Encyclopedia Brittanica Films

This film is from 1946. A great video. See where we are on the scale of Democracy vs. Despotism. Post your answer below for discussion. Here is the definition of Despotism from Wikki: Despotism is a form of government by a single authority, either an individual or tightly knit group, which rules with absolute political power. In its classical form, a despotism is a state where one single More.. person, called a Despot, wields all the power and authority, and everyone else is considered his slave. This form of despotism was the first known form of statehood and civilization; the Pharaoh of Egypt is a hallmark of a classical Despot. The term now implies tyrannical rule. However, in enlightened absolutism (also known as benevolent or enlightened despotism), which came to prominence in 18th century Europe, absolute monarchs used their authority to institute a number of reforms in the political systems and societies of their countries. This movement was probably largely triggered by the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment. Even though the word has a pejorative meaning nowadays, it was once a legitimate title of office in the Byzantine Empire. Just as the word "Byzantine" is often used in a pejorative way (for specific reasons by certain Enlightenment authors wishing to express disapproval of that period in history), the word "Despot" was equally turned around for negative meaning. In fact, "Despot" was an Imperial title, first used under Manuel I Komnenos (1143?1180) who created it to his appointed heir Alexius-B?la. According to Gyula Moravcsik this title was a simple translation of B?la's Hungarian title '?r', but other historians believe it comes from the ancient Greek, despotes (literally, 'the master'). In the Orthodox Liturgy, if celebrated in Greek, the priest is addressed by the deacon as "despot" even today. It was typically bestowed on sons-in-law and later sons of the Emperor, and beginning in the 13th century it was bestowed to foreign princes. The Despot wore an elaborate costume similar to the Emperor's and had many privileges. Despots ruled over parts of the empire called Despotates. The English government is cited to have reduced the American people under absolute despotism in the United States Declaration of Independence. "But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."

If the Globalist's NWO master Plan for Utopia is so great then why all the wars, death, destruction, starvation, SECRECY and LIES? I see all countries are passing Gestapo style anti-terrorism laws that allow them to target people that criticize government. Thought crimes. The truth is being suppressed. You have nothing to fear but fear itself. We are like the ants driving off the elephant, we don't need a leader. The Theorem of Cognitive Dissonance holds that the mind automatically and involuntarily rejects information not in line with previously held beliefs. Keep following the Globalist's script to global Armageddon and a one world dictatorship as laid out in their book, the revelations. Sycophants to authority all simply going along with it. I love that you are educating yourself but there are only a few million people awake globally at the present time. If you could think of better content for the short clips take it away. I'm just sharing suppressed information. I see a large grassroots movement growing slowly, email and internet video sharing sites as well as p2p is causing the global conscience to stir. I see family and friends physically sick from what they now see is going on. No more hiding from the facts. Wikipedia - Aspartame - Health concerns Aspartame has been the subject of controversy regarding its safety and the circumstances of its approval by the American FDA and European FSA. Some studies have also recommended further investigation into possible connections between aspartame and negative effects such as headaches, brain tumors, brain lesions, and lymphoma. These findings, combined with possible conflicts of interest involving CEO Donald Rumsfeld in the approval process, have engendered vocal activism regarding the possible risks of aspartame. Brain Tumors? Approved by Donald Rumsfeld around the same time he was shaking hands with Saddam Hussein and selling him chemical weapons with which to gas the Kurds? I've been working on a 12 step video, hoping to squeeze enough into 2 hours of youtube ten minute videos to break the spell of lies. A hand-out format to make it easier for people to share around would be nice. "12 Steps to Freedom" First let me start by saying that the term conspiracy theory is often used by the guilty to eliminate articulate dissent. Secondly "Paranoid" is the ability to connect seemingly unconnected events! 1) Admitting you have a problem: Food Poisoned with Government Approval MSG Aspartame GMO 2) Came to believe in the power Greater than ourselves: Education School is for indoctrination into debt slavery 3) Made a decision to get the Truth: Media has been lying and spitting on our faces 4) Made a searching and fearless moral inventory: Organized Religion has been lying and stealing our joy 5) Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs: Narcotics Hemp eases a myriad of symptoms and is nearly free yet they claim it makes you insane. It would replace the petrochemical industry. 6) Were entirely ready to remove these shortcomings of society: Economics, debt slavery, Usury is theft plain and simple. 7) Humbly asked for help to remove these shortcomings: Politicians have been lying and spitting on our faces, Seek direct democracy. 8) Made a list of all the wrongdoers: Conscience, Take personal responsibility and stop being childish 9) Made direct amends for all the wrongs: Community Say hello to the neighbors, call old friends and family. 10) Continued to take personal inventory and when we saw a wrong promptly corrected it: Learn the truth about earth 11) Sought through meditation and fellowship to improve our contact with each other, the earth and Cosmos: Learn to meditate, relax and entertain yourself. 12) Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps we carried this message to our fellow humans: Responsibly take alternatives, solutions, discussions, questions, and open debates honestly seeking help. We need some collective gathering place for the people around the globe, political differences aside, this is a human issue not a political one. Politics is the only arena we have left with which to enter and hope to have our voices heard on mainstream media. I'm using email, video hosting and many world wide forums to disseminate information, raise doubts, cause controversy and create debate. Stir it up, wake the world, nothing good was ever accomplished while we slept. Get involved politically. http://members.shaw.ca/davefparker/

Despotism - signs of

A democracy can really be DESPOTISM. Is the USA actually despotism? See the signs and decide for yourself. 1) Lack of respect for other groups, such as races, classes, political attitude or religion (accepted calling others in society names based on sex, sexual preferance, race, religion, intolerance for people who do not believe in the 'accepted' religion) 2) Majority of the Wealth and Property is in the hands of the few (big businesses conglomeratives, Walmart instead of small business, less people owning their own homes, fewer family farms) 3) Decision making is in the hands of the few 4) Demanding of Patriotism from all citizens (such as criticizing any group of people for not wearing flag pins) 5) Taxation is pressing heaviest on those less able to pay. Taxation is comparably less on the wealthier (tax cuts for the rich) 6) No allowance for questioning authority. No teaching students of critical thinking skills (As in the No- child-left behind requirements) 7) Ceremonial congress with no real power (any law passed gets veto-ed by PoTUS) This video is from 1946 and was produced by Encyclopedia Britanica. Funny how they seemed to know.
