476 inch elk, was #6 world record. Taken with an original Sharps 1874 sporting rifle (.45-.70), iron sites at 204 yards. (all original except the butt.) Incredible rifle. We found his sheds last winter and spotted him twice, once in the spring, once in August. There were a number of really nice bulls in the area but we were holding out for the big guy.

I captured this footage at an elk wallow in Colorado in September of 2009. This elk calf was one of three calves trying to dominate the wallow.

Up at a ranch outside of Bonners Ferry, the livestock being raised is elk, not cattle. It is also the perfect place for people to practice their elk calls, especially hunters. Dan Barth goes along for elk calls in this edition of Outdoor Storytellers.
