Music of Epirus: Kenge per Celo Mezanin
This song is a tribute to the Çam Albanian hero Çelo Mezani. The song is being narrated by his friends with whom he fought since his early years, and finally saw him get shot three times while fighting with them... which to them seems unbelieveable. This song is a "slow motion" description of this event. Kenge per Celo Mezanin Aman doli djelli ne Malavire Qisi Celua ne Harile Hajde Hajde, qisi Celua ne Harile Hisi Celua ne Harile Per te shkreten Pajgorile Aman Aman, per te shkreten Pajgorile Mu te pusi Sulejmanit Pusin e Celo Mezanit Aman Aman, pusi e Celo Mezanit Kur na ra martine pare Celua na ktheu surrane Aman Aman, Celua na ktheu surrane Kur na ra martine dyte Celua gremisi syte Aman Aman, Celua gremisi syte Kur na ra martine trete Celua u vra me te vertete Aman Aman, Celua u vra me te vertete Vane nenes e ja thane Se Celon e kane vrare Aman Aman, se Celon e kane vrare Mos me thoni kete fjale Se Celon e kam te gjalle Aman Aman, se Celon e kam te gjalle ---- A song for the Hero Celo Mezani The sun rose over Malevile and Çelo came near Harile (repeat of last sentence) Çelo came in Harile For the woeful consolation Right at Sulejman's trap Çelo Mezani was ambushed When the first gunshot came Çelo wondered and looked at us When the second shot came Çelo closed his eyes Then the third shot came Çelo was really dead... Ohh... he's really dead (with astonishment) They went and told to his poor mother they said that Çelo was shot and dead How dare you say this word to me, my Çelo is still alive! my Çelo is still alive... (Thanks Pirrothecham for your help) NOTE: Please notice that the text seems to describe only snapshots of the story ina very unusual way. In Albania this writing technique helps make the lyrics and song more painful... as if the person that is singing it is in Complete Shock! Cheers |

CHAMERIA, CHAMIKO, CHAM . EPIRUS, ETHNIC ALBANIA
This song as the title suggest would not have been on youtube today, if the greek ethnic clensing of albanins in epirus Chameria would not have taken place in the summer of 1944.Thousands of civilians were killed, including elderly , children and pregnant women. These dark side of greek history still is not known in Europe. Until today greek govements don't seem to feel sorry and apologyse for the crimes comited agains ethnic albanians in Chameria, Epirus. Albanian goverments too have became part in their antihuman rights policy, simply for doing nothing and helping greek goverments to hide the genocide. Shamesly Albanian parliament didn't even aproove a rezolute for Chameria, which in this case is a pure act of traitors. Music of Epirus: Fjale lamtumire - Petrit Lulo
Fjale lamtumire aman mos me thuaj Me ty me shkon viti, viti sa nje muaj Mos me ler ne akull, akull dhe debore Me ty me shkon dita, dita sa nje ore. Se ketu e vetme zemer po te mbetesh Nje lloj porsi loti, edhe vesa tretesh Rri ne zemren time, porsi xhevairi Asnje here o zemer mos mu ndaj nga syri. Puthme si nje foshnje, puthme dhe me duaj Ne kete rremuje, ne jemi huaj Per pak paqe moj, zemra mu copetua Vetem ty te kame, dhe ti vetem mua. |

Pelasgians in Epirus
The song is 'To America We Go', sung by Mary Jane Lamond with Ashley MacIsaac on the fiddle. The translation from the Gaelic is: 'It is Cape Breton the land of my love, The land of the trees and high mountains, It is Cape Breton the land of my love, The most beautiful land on earth to us. Over across the islands, to America we go, Over across the islands, to America we go, Over across the islands, to America we go, Over across the islands, to America we go, Over across the islands, to America we go, Over by way of England and home by way of Ireland.' **** Ancient Greek historians write about Dodona in Epirus being the 'seat of the Pelasgians' (Hesiod), but research shows conflicting information. Some scholars point out that there were no Pelasgians living in Dodona, but were other nations such as the Helli and Perrhaebi, who originated in Thessaly and migrated to Epirus before the Trojan war. Others point out how 'Pelasgic' was also an adjective that suggested someone or something being ancient. Albanians claim that Illyrians were Pelasgians and that Dodona was sacred to them. History show that Illyrians invaded Epirus many times, and while Dodona was under the authority of Molossians, actually ravaged Dodona until the sacred oak tree that was used as the oracle was cut down by an Illyrian bandit. There are more quotes here than in the video, so I hope people will read them too. **** -DODONA 'The Oracle of Dodona is often mentioned in Homer, and was the most ancient and most celebrated in the early ages of Greece.' (Thomas Smart Hughes, Joseph Mawman, Charles, Travels in Sicily, Greece and Albania p511) '--Pellasgic Dodonaan Jove. The propriety of these appellations in reference to the speaker Achilles, will appear, by considering, that the Myrmidons were a branch of the Pelasgi, and that Dodona is said to have been built by a Pelasgic tribe out of Thessaly. Achilles thus evokes Jupiter as domestic divinity' (A Classical Manual of the Iliad, foot note on book XVI p 238) 'The scholiast proceeds to tell us that the city of Dodona was founded by Deucalion, who came to Epirus after the deluge, and consulted the oracular oak, when he was directed by the dove to build the city, which was named Dodona from one of the Oceanides. He adds, that the Pelasgi settled near Dodona, being originally a Thessalian nation, and though this account is a little different, confirms what we have before mentioned of the Perrhaebi.' (Thomas Smart Hughes, Joseph Mawman, Charles, Travels in Sicily, Greece and Albania p512) 'Dodona had been one of the most ancient places of pilgrimage for the Hellenic race, especially for the Athenians.' (George Grote, History of Greece, p 534) 'It was anciently believed, and apparently not without reason, that three or four centuries before the Trojan war two Pelasgic colonies began to civilize the barbarians of Epirus: that which came from the Peloponnesus by sea (...) the other from the Pelasgic settlements in the north of Thessaly crossed the Pindus and occupied Dodona.' 'William Martin Leake, Travels in Northern Greece, p 174) 'The Oracle of Zeus at Dodona traces its roots back to the early(...) it appears that the Zeus-worshipping Greeks had imposed their god on the site ' (John S. Bowman, Frommer's Greece, p 527) -Perrhaebic, Helli, Selli &Graïci -MOLOSSIANS (Guardings of Dodona) 'Dodona was the oldest oracle in Hellas. Its origin date back to earlier than 1000 BC. A few temple foundations remain, and the standing walls of the acropolis can still be easily recognized. The Theater of Dodona rises impressively from the plain, with massive walls up to 20 meters high. Built during the reign of King Pyrrhus of Epirus (297-272 BC). Dodona's theater was the second largest in Greece, after that of Megolopolis.' (Wolfgang Josing, Greece, pp187-188) -ILLYRIANS 'The Illyrians were in these ancient times also bounded to the east by the Phrygians and Thracians, as well as the Pelasgi' (Karl Otfried Müller, The History and Antiquities of the Doric Race, p 8) 'Again and again Dodona was ravaged, but so long as the oak was standing the temple rose anew. When at last an Illyrian bandit cut down the oak, the presence of Zeus was gone' (Evelyn Abbott Hellenica, p 443) 'The priests were called Tomari, from the neighbouring mountain Tomarus, but they and the oracle were finally put an end to, and the oaks of Dodona felled by an Illyrian peasant' (William Douglas Hamilton, Outlines of the History of Greece, in connection with the rise of the arts p 10) 'sometime in 385/4 the Illyrians invaded Molossis in strength and had to be expelled by Sparta' (P. J. Stylianou, A Historical Commentary on Diodorus Siculus Book 15, p212) |

Scanderbeg - King of Epirus
A British poem about the return of the Albanian Prince Gjergj Kastrioti Scanderbeg in his homeland, as he frees Albania of the Turkish Pasha Ak-Hissar. 1800s SCANDERBEG LONGFELLOW, Henry W. Atlantic Monthly, The Volume 31, Issue 187 May 1873 SCANDERBEG The battle is fought and won By King Ladislaus the Hun, In fire of hell and death's frost, On the day of Pentecost; And in rout before his path From the field of battle red Flee all that are not dead Of the army of Amurath. *********** In the darkness of the night Iskander, the pride and boast Of that mighty Othman host, With his routed Turks, takes flight From the battle fought and lost On the day of Pentecost; **************** Leaving behind him dead The army of Amurath, The vanguard as it led, The rearguard as it fled, Mown down in the bloody swath Of the battle's aftermath. *********** But he cared not for Hospodars, Nor for Baron or Voivode, As on through the night he rode, And gazed at the fatal stars That were shining overhead; But smote his steed with his staff, And smiled to himself, and said: "This is the time to laugh." ************ In the middle of the night, In a halt of the hurrying flight, There came a Scribe of the King Wearing his signet ring, And said in a voice severe: "This is the first dark blot On thy name, George Castriot! Alas ! why art thou here, And the army of Amurath slain, And left on the battle plain?" ************* And Iskander answered and said: "They lie on the bloody sod By the hoofs of horses trod; But this was the decree Of the watchers overhead ; For the war belongeth to God, And in battle who are we, Who are we, that shall withstand The wind of his lifted hand?" ************ Then he bade them bind with chains This man of books and brains; And the Scribe said: "What misdeed Have I done, that without need, Thou doest to me this thing?" And Iskander answering Said unto him: "Not one Misdeed to me hast thou done; But for fear that thou shouldst run And hide thyself from me, Have I done this unto thee." *********** "Now write me a writing, O Scribe, And a blessing be on thy tribe ! A writing sealed with thy ring, To King Amurath's Pasha In the city of Croia, The city moated and walled, That he surrender the same In the name of my master, the King; For what is writ in his name Can never be recalled." ********** And the Scribe bowed low in dread, And unto Iskander said : "Allah is great and just, We are but ashes and dust! How shall I do this thing, When I know that my guilty head Will be forfeit to the King?" ********* Then swift as a shooting star The curved and shining blade Of Iskander's scimitar From its sheath, with jewels bright, Shot, as he thundered: "Write!" And the trembling Scribe obeyed, And wrote in the fitful glare Of the bivouac fire apart, With the chill of the midnight air On his forehead white and bare, And the chill of death in his heart. ********** Then again Iskander cried: "Now follow whither I ride, For here thou must not stay. Thou shalt be as my dearest friend, And honors without end Shall surround thee on every side, And attend thee night and day. " But the sullen Scribe replied: "Our pathways here divide; Mine leadeth not thy way.".... |

Northern Epirus
Northern Epirus is the land that today is called south Albania. Since the ancient times it was a Greek homeland and still it is even though it doesnt belong to the Greek state currently. More than 300,000 Greeks are living there today. Unfortunatelly the Albanian government is denying many of human rights to the Greeks of Northern Epirus. This small film is showing young Greek schoolkids in Northern Epirus singing a poem from the late 18th century which is about the dream of freedom of the enslaved Greeks. |

the Heart of Epirus
***IF YOU CLICK ON VIEW ALL COMMENTS, YOU WILL SEE THE ANSWERS FOR THE ALBANIANS WHO CLAIM THAT GREEKS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH EPIRUS. DON'T REPLY DIRECTLY TO THEM, BUT START NEW POSTS.***** I have been thinking of this project for some time now, and although similar in vein to the 'discussion/confession' videos I have made, it differs in its aggressiveness. Indeed, the concern was the loss of the Hellenic spirit that I see as all too common on youtube these days. The Greeks brought with them their culture and influenced the natives in language, art, dress, and because Hellenism is itself a doctrine of hybridism, took from competitors such as the Phoenicians. Purism, with its tribal undertones is a threat to Hellenism, so it is indeed a surprise to find Greeks espousing purism of any kind, dogmatic or racial (which feeds into the outraged persona of this video). The Greeks had been colonizers of the Ancient world, establishing colonies across the Mediterranean from Emporion, Agatha and Massalia (Marseilles, France) west, to Sinope, Trapezus and Phasis in the east. These 'over-seas' colonies were differentiated by the colonies on the continent (Epirus in Greek, Ήπειρος'). Epirus was on Illyrian territory and was colonized by Greeks as early as the Mycenaean times. The notes on this video are a response to Albanian Nationalists who claim that Greeks were never in Epirus, and as such, would like to claim the only civilized part of Illyria as part of their Albanian heritage. The video shows numerous pictures of Greek monuments built throughout the ages, from antiquity (the Shrine of Dodona) to the Byzantine bridges and churches. The words are all in iambic tetrameter (except where I choose to break the rhythm to show doubt)and the structure is using the ballad form. The song is Stis pikrodafnis ton antho, a famous Epirote tune that is danced with Sirtos sta duo, one of the most romantic and noble dances. The song is like a ballad, describing the betrayal of love, its pain, and the wounds it carries on the heart. The singer is Areti Ketime, young and very talented. The paintings are from Jean-Léon Gérôme, eugene Delacroix, and Simon Vouet. This video will probably not be liked, but please rate it and comment on it, even if it's negative. |

Epirus - Greece
"The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is." Winston Churchill "Speakers of these various Greek dialects settled different parts of Greece at different times during the Middle Bronze Age, with one group, the "northwest" Greeks, developing their own dialect and peopling central Epirus. This was the origin of the Molossian or Epirotic tribes." E.N.Borza "In the shadow of Olympus; The emergence of Macedon" (revised edition, 1992), page 62 |
