Red Tailed Hawks can often be seen cruising overhead at Fresh Pond. They hunt pidgeons, squirrels, voles, and other small prey. Two days before this sighting a Red Tailed caught a squirrel and, with surgical precision, removed the stomach and intestines (found on the ground under the branch on which it dined). It started out like your normal stormy day. Then the wind started to rise. Minutes later the rain began. Then, still later, the wind got stronger and the rain increased. The day didn't start out as a storm. That changed about 20 minutes after arriving. At one point the fear of death came over me as a microburst, and just short of a tornado, whirled away about 50 feet away from where I was standing amongst some pine trees. It was over quickly then turned to a torrential downpour where water seemed to be coming from every horizontal direction.

Helicopters fly over the Fresh Pond Reservation every day, several times a day, generally from south to north and vice versa. Are they the conspiratorial/proverbial black helicopters? This Sunday blizzard hit much of the East Coast. There appeared to be about a foot of snow in places without drifting. The wooden bench is made from a single piece of wood, carved from a tree knocked down during an August 2004 tornado at the pond.
