Slave Castles of Ghana
Our next stop was Cape Coast and Elmina, towns on the coast with friendly people, laid back attitudes, beautiful palm lined beaches and unfortunately, a not so beautiful past. It was here where the start of the Gold Trade and eventually, the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade began. We stopped at Cape Coast Castle, a fort where slaves and gold were traded. Owned ultimately by the British, it is where many of the ancestors of Black Americans were held against their will, until being forced on the ... |

Old African Slave Song
I am from California and I went to Ghana in the Spring of 2008. I toured northern Ghana where I took this footage. This site is five hundred or so years old. The far reaching desert and the barren landscape was the spot where colonialists kept their first slaves. They didn't have walls or buildings to keep them enclosed from the outside world, but the desert served as a barrier to escape. If a slave tried to escape, they would surely die of starvation, dehydration or heat exhaustion. The ... |

Elmina Slave Castle - Elmina, Ghana Oct.7, 2009.ASF
The Elmina Slave Castle was erected by the Portuguese in 1482, and restored by the Ghanaian government in the 1990s as a national museum and monument. The oldest European building in existence below the Sahara, the castle is located in Elmina, Ghana. Possession of the castle changed with the Dutch's seizure in 1637, and later the British in 1871. The British granted the Ghana (former the Gold Coast) independence in 1957. This video was created during my group's tour of the castle in 2009.... |
