Traveling in the ethnic minority areas of eastern Guizhou province in China during spring of 2007

As part of the Beehive Project, we traveled to Guizhou, China, and documented our findings on decrepit schools which were in need of funding to rebuild. The condition of some of these schools were unbelievable, and we hope this short video can demonstrate that as long as you're willing to provide aid, regardless of the amount, there are innumerable ways of doing so. A few hundred Miao people live in Upper Lang De in Guizhou, China. They sustain themselves by fishing, raising water oxes, pigs, and chickens, and putting on daily shows for tourists. I had the opportunity to stay with a Miao family for several days.

The piece is divided into three parts:"Song of Pipa", "Dance of Leaf", "The surging Qian Water". This piece is well received by Zheng players and music lovers in China and abroad, and it has won many composition prizes. SOng of Pipa: The melody and tone is based on Guizhou's folk song. The careful use "Hua"滑音(glissando) and "An"按音(pushing) as well as alternation of long ＆ short phrases express the lingering charm of the folk musician's chanting and singing. Dance of Leaves: Made use of new performing techniques and complicated change in rhythms(alternating 3/4 ＆ 5/8) in order to show the bold and unrestrained dancing posture as well as the primitive wild scenery of the field and mountains. The Surging Qian Water: There are many high mountains and valleys around the Geizhou area. The music is a picture of the rapids, streams and the high lofty mountains. The composer made use of a lot of fast passages on the left hand. This is the first time for the instrument to let the left hand do this kind of fingerings continuingly and independently.

I forgot why the Biasha Miao walk backward while playing the Lusheng. There must be a story behind it. offering of rice must have something to do with their ancestor or maybe to a spiritual deity. the log fights is a reenact of the miao people's famous bull fights. the miao love their rice to be colorful. this dye of rice can be found during the sister festival.
