Hiawatha Live Steamers 3" Hudson Tribute to John Woods Pt I

On our third, and what would be final, run up the hill Saturday, the whistle valve stuck open. With no shut off valve at our disposal, we had no choice but to let the whistle continue blowing. Afterwards, we realized it was a fitting tribute to our recent fallen Grand Scaler, John Woods, of the ATT&NW RR in Missouri. Otherwise, the Hudson steamed quite well and had no problems negotiating the new 83' radius curve as well as the 3.75% grade. So, from high in the Adirondacks, may all your signals be high green, John. You will be missed. Video by Rob Gardner.

Hiawatha Rag Barber Chris 1990

Hiawatha Rag Barber Chris 1990 In a reunion concert series to celebrate the band's 40th anniversary the Chris Barber Jazz Band plays Hiawatha Rag, a tune they had recorded in the mid fifties for the first time. Chris had found some of the former members of the band for this set of the concert. Trumpet/cornet player Pat Halcox is still in the band, former members are Monty Sunshine clarinet, Jim Bray bass and Colin Bowden drums. When I think of my early days of playing in the Netherlands I remember using this Barber arrangement for my own group. Then when I immigrated to Canada in 1966 and joined the Climax Jazz Band in 1971 I introduced almost this same arrangement there as well. I left Climax some 10 years ago, but I believe the band still plays it, and I'm sure in that same arrangement. It was one of our most requested tunes at the many festivals we played. Thank you Chris!

HIAWATHA RAG - The Charlie McNair Skiffle Group

From a BELTONA '78' from the fifties. (BL2670) Not so much a skiffle group as a trad band! [I can't find any reference to Charlie McNair on t'internet. Does anyone know anything please?] The Olympian and the successor Olympian Hiawatha was a named passenger train operated by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (The Milwaukee Road) as train Nos. 15 and 16 from 1911 to 1961. Its route traversed the Milwaukee Road main line from Chicago, Illinois west to Seattle/Tacoma, Washington. The streamlined Olympian Hiawatha replaced the Milwaukee's heavyweight Olympian train in 1947. The train was designed by industrial designer Brooks Stevens and included the destinctive glassed-in "Skytop" observation-sleeping cars. In 1952 the Milwaukee Road added full-length "Super Dome" cars to the train.

Biking the Hiawatha

We biked the famous Hiawatha Trail, near Wallace, Idaho, in western Montana in the summers of 2005 and 2007. This 15 mile trail is downhill all the way, and has 10 tunnels, including a 1.66 mile tunnel underneath the Idaho/Montana border. Its a terrific ride, and is family friendly, as you'll see in the video.

Hiawatha (Section,) by Longfellow, pub. 1855

Poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, published in 1855. Text below: The Song of Hiawatha part of Section III Thus was born my Hiawatha, Thus was born the child of wonder; But the daughter of Nokomis, Hiawatha's gentle mother, In her anguish died deserted By the West-Wind, false and faithless, By the heartless Mudjekeewis. For her daughter long and loudly Wailed and wept the sad Nokomis; "Oh that I were dead!" she murmured, "Oh that I were dead, as thou art! No more work, and no more weeping, Wahonowin! Wahonowin!" By the shores of Gitche Gumee, By the shining Big-Sea-Water, Stood the wigwam of Nokomis, Daughter of the Moon, Nokomis. Dark behind it rose the forest, Rose the black and gloomy pine-trees, Rose the firs with cones upon them; Bright before it beat the water, Beat the clear and sunny water, Beat the shining Big-Sea-Water. There the wrinkled old Nokomis Nursed the little Hiawatha, Rocked him in his linden cradle, Bedded soft in moss and rushes, Safely bound with reindeer sinews; Stilled his fretful wail by saying, "Hush! the Naked Bear will hear thee!" Lulled him into slumber, singing, "Ewa-yea! my little owlet! Who is this, that lights the wigwam? With his great eyes lights the wigwam? Ewa-yea! my little owlet!"

Wonyip To Hiawatha Time Lapse

Time lapse video of a drive from Wonyip, South Gippsland through parts of the Strzelecki Ranges to The Falls of Minnie Ha Ha at Hiawatha. Capturing every fifth frame from a Sony mini-DV camera mounted on the roof to an iBook. Music performed on a Kawai MS710 using "One Finger Ad Lib" and the "Country" accompaniment style. As usual in this part of the world I encountered no other cars but nearly skittled a wallaby (at around 2'30"). From These Beginnings (History of the Shire of Alberton)' - John Adams. (page 168.) "When Fairview residents on the Albert River road sought a direct mail service via Stacey's Bridge in late 1913, the name 'Fairview' could not be used as there were other places with that name. It was changed to 'Hiawatha', for Longfellow's American Indian hero, the name coming from Albert Box whose farm was named 'Yosemite' from Yosemite Park in California."
