Man-made pollution is often blamed for creating hypoxic zones, a.k.a "dead zones" in coastal waters. Pollution can enhance hypoxia, but as this video demonstrates, natural physical processes are more important in creating and sustaining dead zones. Unfortunately, the media usually incorrectly reports that man-made pollution is the cause of dead zones, which is not true in most cases. Please also watch Hypoxia 101B.

This was me getting Hypoxic inside the UND Altitude Chamber. They lowered the air pressure to simulate flight at 25,000 feet, then we took the masks off and as you can see, some interesting things happened.

Hypoxic Zones, aka "dead zones" in the Gulf of Mexico are a hot news topic, but the media are often very confused about their cause. While fertilizer runoff undoubtedly has an effect, dead zones would still occur without it. To learn more about hypoxic zones, watch Hypoxia 101A and 101B.

Before going on a parabolic test flight, NASA C9B fliers are required to complete hypoxia training (we completed it at Lemoore Naval Air Station in CA on July 17, 2008). Of all the trainees, I'm seated closest to the camera (leftmost in the view). Watch us get loopy as we play patty-cake to more rapidly use up our oxygen supply. During this video, the chamber atmosphere was pumped to the same pressure observed at 20000 feet. Its not long until our fingernails turn blue. I rapidly started having euphoric like symptoms...

So, we went skydiving, and they had some special loads that would go extra high. Usually we jump at 12000 feet, but this one went all the way to 21000 feet. But something appeared to be wrong with the oxygen system in the cabin, or something other happend why we didn't got enough oxygen. Anyway, I passed out, my friend woke up at 12000 feet falling to the earth, after he unknowingly jumped out. Neither of us can remember the jump, but we got it on video :) whoehahaha.

This is a reconstruction Of crash Helios Airways flight 522. The plane had problems with presurisation then Hypoxia set in everyone on the jet was uncontiouce accept for one flight attandant. And how was he alive on the final hours before the crash. The jet crash on August 14th 2005 at 11:58AM. Killing all 121 crew and passengers.

The symptoms can be much like alcohol, it can affect different people in different ways. Stupor, slurred speech, amnesia, feeling of well-being, overconfidence, loss of coordination, mental confusion, argumentativeness, ect... Chuck Yeager was/is a smart cookie, he spotted a wingmen's errors, he tried to alert the pilot in distress, but the pilot in distress became combative, rather than to try to win an argument, Chuck Yeager used psychology, he used the pilot's compassion to save him. Chuck Yeager made up a white lie/a diversion, Yeager said he had a flameout, which alerted the pilot in distress and fed on the distressed pilot's sense of loyalty and compassion. So the pilot in distress followed Yeager to a lower altitude, where the pilot recovered without mishap.

First the pilots are told to take their masks of at a chamber altitude of 26,000 feet to see what symptoms they get and how quickly they get them. Afterwards it's time for a rapid decompression.
