Intersubjectivity and Mirror Neurons

Marco Iacoboni, M.D., Ph.D., discusses data on mirror neurons that suggest that their role in intersubjectivity may be more accurately described as allowing interdependence. This interdependence shapes the social interactions between people. where the concrete encounter between self and other becomes shared existential meaning that connects them deeply. Series: "M.I.N.D. More on intersubjectivity

Intersubjecting seems to me to be rooted in a deeply spiritual (which really just means ego-transcending) experience.

Science in the Second

Here I try to elaborate on Matt's suggestion of second person intersubjective and transpersonal approaches to consciousness. What better way to argue that intersubjectivity is at the heart of things through the intersubjective dialectic exchange?

part/whole :: fact/meaning

The meaning of every being must be respected, else the meaning of your being becomes contested. A fact that has no meaning is a part unfitted for reality.

Re: Re: The Cosmos as an Organism (not a machine)

responsibility has got to take on a new meaning now. I didn't mention this in the video, but I think we need to be responsible for eachother more in the habit/novelty paradigm than in the law/freedom paradigm. In the later, everyone is out for themselves, free to pursue their own rational self-interest while the law keeps everyong in check from high above (that's the plan, at least). Capitalism may very well be based on a faulty understanding of human nature, one that is forcibly taught to children of Capitalist societies and not innately expressed by them on their own. If the ego is a social convention, then intersubjectivity is the new bottom rung on the ladder of human culture. That means relationship and communion come before we objectify eachother into discrete and individual persons. If we are all neurons in one mind, and indeed all elements manifested by one cosmos, then we have always been in this together. I don't know if this means we have to become "socialists." I think it means we have to start considering the larger context of our day to day, individual lives, though. Adyashanti: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eECJCIkhxc4

Re: Spectacle and Spectators

A rational discourse can be supported by Youtube's format, and by the internet in general... but I think to be successful this discourse needs a spiritual basis. By spirituality I only mean that we must transcend our commonsensical notions of identity, because those notions are precisely the problem. We consider ourselves to be spectators and passive observers of the world. We must re-connect with life and with others. Intersubjectivity, at least as "I" experience it, requires the dissolution of the ego structure of consciousness. To communicate we must become participants in the creation and trafficing of cultural meaning. This requires that all of humanity remembers what the essence of the human experience is. At that level, we become eachother and "the public" can return. Each of us becomes a neuron in a vast and enlightened global mind (supported by the internet), even while we as individual's are still free to "re-tribalize" on the geographical plane.

The Boundary of Truth

Talk of truth is cheap if we aim only to sell. If we want to exchange the genuine article, we need also to buy, and no doubt to share what we own. The economy of thought ought to be for the common good. Communication is a transaction, not a competition. Dialogue so often leads to more truth than debate, don't you agree?
