In 2003 people on the Westside watched as 10s of thousands of Kelowna residents were forced to flee what was referred to as the Kelowna Firestorm. Hundreds of homes were destroyed as the fire raged on day after day in the late summer heat. July 18, 2009 it was Glenrosa, West Kelowna that faced of with the ravages of a fire storm. Our trip to Vancouver BC starts in Kelowna May 12 with a fast drive to Merritt.

The fire season didn't just start, we have had a drought for some time and the forests have been drying out, perfect for forest fires. We all hope and pray that these fires are put no injuries or anymore property loss, but the fire season won't be over yet. We are only in July and the fires can happen anywhere. Well we went for a day trip 2 Kelowna British Columbia. At about 2:30-3:00pm we noticed a lot of smoke coming from the Okanagan Connector and well what do u know. A huge forest fire had started and we still had to try 2 get out of town. This video was taken from my phone while we tried to get through the connector. There was ash falling and the fire was closer then the video showed. This was taken about 4:15 on July 18, 2009. (ignore the stupid commentary on my part. pls)...

The Kelowna Ogopogo Radio Controller's Flying Club is always looking for new members. They will also be looking for a new area to fly due to plans to flood this beautiful valley and make it off limits to people.

At approx.10 am July 19, 2009 Kelownas Mission Creek Erupted in Flames and we were there. The fire grew in intensity as firefighters scrambled in response ultimately calling in a water bomber to drop fire retardant. Mission Creek was also the sight of a fire in the 2003 Kelowna Fire Storm. Although the conditions are bone dry there have not been any lightning strikes to trigger this rash of wild fires leaving many to ponder whether we have the most careless people living here or something ...
