Ambiguously political Ellen DeGeneres wanted to have some words with anti-gay lawmaker, Sally Kern. Unfortunately, Mrs. Kern's mailbox was full, so DeGeneres never got to find out which societies homos have destroyed. Shame. Maybe Kern will see Ellen's televised message and give her a ring-a-ding!

Music by Jerome Kern Lyrics by Dorothy Fields This is the original performance of the song, from 1935. Irene Dunne had a remarkable career, including 5 academy award nominations for best actress, Kennedy Center honoree, UN diplomat, and philanthropist. However, she said her proudest achievement was having Jerome Kern write this song for her. Dunne is the female singer most closely associated with Kern's music. Kern's favorite male singer is also in this video - he's the conductor. Another Dunne video I posted was "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" - that was the scene where she and Randolph Scott broke up. This song, later in the movie, is their reconciliation. Interesting trivia - the fur she is wearing cost 9,000 dollars in 1935 - that's over $100,000 today. During filming, she had a special bodyguard following her around - to protect the dress!

"Death Valley '69" is a Super-8 film from 1986 directed by Richard Kern. It also served as the first music video by Sonic Youth. It features the majority of the band in various states of bloody dismemberment interlaced with live footage of the band. The video is the only one to feature both the recently departed drummer Bob Bert, and then new member Steve Shelley. Sonic Youth members play both serial killers along with their gorily-hacked victims, interpolated with footage of Lung Leg from Kern's film "Submit To Me" (1985) and scenes from counterculture classic "The Strawberry Statement" (1970). More than a little thematically unclear, the video combines its Charles Manson iconography with stock war footage and sequences where the band joins hands in a circle like a bunch of blissed out hippies. An image of Lung Leg from "Submit To Me" that Kern had used in the Death Valley video also appears as the cover for Sonic Youth's next album, "EVOL".
