Lijiang Known as the Venice of the Far East, Lijiang is an historic old Chinese town in the northwest province of Yunnan. It was the centre of the Naxi, a Tibetan-Tobirmanic nation that had an impressive and unique culture. Dayan, Lijiangs old town, contains an intriguing variety of canals and waterways. Dance with the "Naxi" - a traditional Chinese ethnic minority. The Naxi has a population of 308839, most of whom live in concentrated communities in the Lijiang Naxi Autonomous County in Yunnan Province, the rest being scattered in Weixi, Zhongdian, Ninglang, Deqin, Yongsheng, Heqing, Jianchuan and Lanping counties in Yunnan Province, as well as Yanyuan, Yanbian and Muli counties in Sichuan Province. A small number live in Mangkang County of Tibet Autonomous Region.

This is a short video of a visit I made to Dr Ho in the Naxi village of Yuhu, near Lijiang. This is the village where Dr Joseph Rock lived in the 1920s and 30s (then known as Nguluko). Dr Ho knew Joseph Rock when he was a boy and claims to have learned English from him.

The most beautiful part of the River Li Jiang is the stretch between Yangdi 杨堤and Xingping 兴坪. A day in and out of the river on a bamboo raft is really relaxing.
