Child Labour
The International Labour Organization (ILO) has estimated that 218 million children between the ages of five and seventeen work in developing countries. Of these, 122.3 million children work in the Asia-Pacific region, 49.3 million work in Sub-Saharan Africa, and 5.7 million work in Latin America and the Caribbean. Most working children in rural areas are found in agriculture; many children work as domestics; urban children work in trade and services, with fewer in manufacturing and construction. Child labor ranges from four-year-olds tied to rug looms to keep them from running away, to seventeen-year-olds helping out on the family farm. In some cases, a child's work can be helpful to him or her and to the family; working and earning can be a positive experience in a child's growing up. This depends largely on the age of the child, the conditions in which the child works, and whether work prevents the child from going to school. |

Child Labour - Philippines
March 1996 We offer you a shocking report on child labour in the Philippines. Mari-Lou is having the best day of her life. She and two friends are screaming at the top of their voices as they descend down a water chute. A government social worker has treated the girls to a day at an amusement park to help them recover from the trauma of being locked up, beaten, unpaid and sexually abused. Recruited from their peasant village to became maids in Manila, they have been totally exploited by their employment agency. Impoverished families are forced to let their children suffer slave labour. At a gold mine, Joel makes $8 a day scrabbling in the mud for any gold ore which spills beneath the wheels of endless trucks. In Manila, 13 year old Brian Marsada is locked into a dim warehouse where he bottles bleach. When it is raided by government forces, Brian escapes. A journey home to the lush but poverty stricken island of Mindanao in the Philippines reunites him with his family. His bright western clothes contrast with his father's torn and dirty shirt. Now embarrassed by the shabby hamlet, he misses the cheap, coloured lights of Manila. |

Labour Lags Ahead of NZ Election
ZHANG: And in New Zealand today, people are voting in the national election. The Labour Party is seeking a fourth term in power. But opinion polls are suggesting that the center-right National Party is poised to lead the country's next government. STORY: Ahead in the opinion polls but New Zealand's opposition National Party leader is taking nothing for granted. No photo opportunity was being missed just hours ahead of voting in national elections. If the opinion polls are right John Key's centre-right party looks poise to lead the next government after nine years under Labour. [John Key, New Zealand National Party Leader]: It feels like there is a really strong mood for change and we've seen that in America, we saw it in Australia last year, but every election is different." Prime Minister Helen Clark's Labour Party is fighting for a fourth term. She says the opinion polls don't reflect reality among the voters. [Helen Clark, New Zealand Prime Minister]: "We're saying stick with what you know, don't gamble with your future because it's a huge jump in the unknown to go down a track at this time of voting for people who have an agenda of cutting back public spending, selling our assets, privatizing our key services." Under New Zealand's proportional voting system no single party has ever won an outright majority of seats. Whoever wins will need to strike deals with minority parties to get their measures through parliament. |

World Day Against Child Labour (12 June 2008)
World Day Against Child Labour (12 June 2008) "It is only education which provides a weapon; a hand with power and a mind with intelligence to break the vicious circle of exploitation and injustice" -- Kailash Satyarthi, Chairperson, Global March Against Child Labour http://www.ilo.org/global/lang--en/index.htm Citing data indicating that many of the estimated 75 million children lacking primary schooling start working at an early age, the International Labour Office (ILO) said today that education was critical to breaking the cycle of child labour and poverty as well as eradicating child labour in its worst forms by 2016. The future belongs to those with a vision to shape it. The ILO and its partners stand for a world where no girl or boy is forced to work at the expense of their health and development or their future prospects of decent work. A future without child labour is at last within reach. Significant progress is being made worldwide in combating child labour. The latest global estimates of trends reinforce this message of hope. However, a strong and sustained global movement is needed to provide the extra push towards eliminating the scourge of child labour. For more information see the Global Report The end of child labour: Within reach. (ILO, 2006) |

Kirsty Wark - Labour Unionist till the bitter end
Kirsty Wark's persona now begins to slip towards the Labour hackery she has long managed to keep reasonably well hidden. Jack McConnell's favourite holiday villa companion looks a right twit in this Newsnight "interview" (more like an inquisition) with First Minister Alex Salmond. Note her utter lack of knowledge of what happened in the Scottish Parliament that day, and her complete contempt and hatred for Alex. Time's up Kirsty! |
