In a Starfleet coup, to take over earth from the Federation, Admiral Layton orders Captain Benteen to disable the Defiant...hence both ships exchange fire. The Lakota would have won if they had used their Quantum torpedoes, but then again Benteen`s orders were to try and disable the Defiant, not destroy her.
