Zarah Leander - Send In The Clowns (Wo Sind die Clowns)

An old Zarah Leander performing "Send In The Clowns" in German (Wo Sind die Clowns), 1978. This is a rare recording of this classic Sondheim tune (one of the diva's last recordings as well). Background: Zarah Leander played the part of Mme Armfeldt in Vienna 1975 (in German) and later in the original Swedish staging of "A Little Night Music" at Folkan in Stockholm 1978 (in Swedish). Only the German version was later recorded, however, in 1978, making this one of Leander's last recordings ...

Zarah Leander- Die Rose von Nowgorod (Theme "War and Peace")

This is a great song, composed by Nino Rota... It tells the story of a girl from Nowgorod. When war reaches Nowgorod she has to say goodbye to her loved one and she never sees him again... It is a very dramatic composition with a beautiful rhythm... According to Jutta Jacobi, who published an excellent biography of Zarah Leander in 2006, this song was a big succes in the Sowjetunion.... For the last few years there has been a lot of speculation about Zarah Leander being a spy for Russia ...

Zarah Leander - Parlami d'amore Mariu(Swedish Version)

The song "Le chaland qui passe" was an enormous hit for French singer Lys Gauty in 1933. It was a translation of the Italian song "Parlami d'amore Mariu" (recorded by Tino Rossi and others). In 1934 Zarah Leander, accompanied by the orchestra of her husband to be, Arne Hülphers, recorded a Swedish version, which in translation means "Love is new every day". Enjoy! Zarah Leander - Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuss auf Liebe...(1930)

In 1930 the movie "Der blaue Engel/The blue angel" was a worldwide sensation. Director Josef von Sternberg found his Lola-Lola in a rather plain and chubby actress called Marlene Dietrich. Up to that time she had starred in plays and silent films with moderate succes... Von Sternberg however applied his genius and turned Marlene Dietrich into the immortal screen legend she is today. The songs she sang became evergreens and especially "Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuss..." was recorded in many ...

Zarah Leander - Nur nicht aus Liebe Weinen (1954 from "Bei Dir war es immer so schön)

In the movie "Bei Dir war es immer so schön" Zarah Leander played a movie star for whom composer Peter Martens writes a song... In a scene in which she plays the Russian empress Catherine the Great, she sings "Nur nicht aus Liebe weinen". Ironically during her years at UFA Zarah Leander was supposed to play Catherine the Great but the plans were eventually scrapped. The movie "Bei Dir war es immer so schön" pays tribute to the music of Theo Mackeben, who died in 1953. Enjoy!...

Zarah Leander - Vilja-Lied (1931 - "Die lustige Witwe")

This is another early recording of Zarah Leander. She sings the famous "Vilja Lied" from Franz Lehar's "Die lustige Witwe" (The merry widow). Her interpretation of Hanna Glawari made her into a Scandinavian superstar... The "Merry Widow" that premiered in 1931 was radically different from the classical operetta. It had been transformed into a modern musical, just keeping the original songs and changing everything else. Famed actor Gösta Ekman (star of FW Murnau's "Faust") was Danilo... One ...

The legendary movie "Der Kongress tanzt" (aka "Le congres s'amuse"/"Congress dances") revolutionized the movie musical... In this movie starring Lilian Harvey and Willy Fritsch, Lilian as Christl sings the song 'Das gibt's nur einmal' while driving in a carriage through Vienna and surroundings on her way to a castle. As she sings, the people alongside the road and working in the fields join her in the chorus of the song. This movie, directed by Eric Charell, became a tremendous succes and ...

Zarah Leander Tribute

Here is a song performed in English by the legendary Swedish-German singer Zarah Leander. Of Swedish origin, Zarah Leander was a huge star in German movie productions of the 1930's and 1940's. She could be seen as the anti-Garbo and also as the anti-Dietrich. After the war, she made a come-back and toured in the late 1950's and 1960's, being an object of nostalgia. With broad shoulders, large moist brown eyes, long flowing hair, and a thrillingly deep voice, she appealed to fans across every ...
