Taiwanese Legislator Condemns Tainted Milk

CHAN: And the poisonous milk scandal is being felt in Taiwan as well. We caught up with one of the island's legislators who had strong words regarding the tainted product. STORY: People in Taiwan are calling on their government to protect the island from dangerous Chinese products. Taiwanese legislator Tien Chiu-chin agrees. [Tien Chiu-chin, Taiwanese Legislator]: "Unethical food products from China are now a threat to the world. We could never imagine that the official seal of a country of this size still lacks credibility. And we have never encountered a situation where milk powder requires such chemical tests.” Tien believes that the powdered milk company Sanlu hasn't been penalized harshly enough in China. [Tien Chiu-chin, Taiwanese Legislator]: "If this happened in an advanced country, Sanlu will be imposed a fine that is big enough to bankrupt it. But they are still operated unpunished in China. I really don't understand what is going on.” The Taiwanese government is now banning foreign milk imports and raising the level of control. NTD, Taipei, Taiwan.

Hong Kong Legislator Demands Food Safety

ANCHOR: An update on China's tainted milk products. On Monday chocolate candy producer Cadbury recalled 11 types of chocolate products from shelves in Hong Kong and the Mainland that were tainted with melamine. And now one Hong Kong legislator is calling for a ban of all dairy products made in China. STORY: China's melamine crisis continues. It's not only Cadbury products that are tainted. Lipton three-in-one milk tea also found the dangerous chemical melamine in some of its products and has called for a recall. Hong Kong councilor Wah-Ming Li calls Cadbury just plain irresponsible. [Wah-Ming Li, Hong Kong Legislative Council]: (quote1, male) From the beginning of the recalls there was just a mention that the products might have a quality problem... without mentioning melamine. It completely ignored consumers rights to know. I dont think that a big company should do such kind of a thing. Councilor Li wants to take food safety to a new level. [Wah-Ming Li, Hong Kong Legislative Council]: (quote2, male): I felt that the Hong Kong government should react and ban all diary products made in China. He says that the Hong Kong governments slow response to product recalls is a result of pressure from the Chinese Communist Party. [Wah-Ming Li, Hong Kong Legislative Council]: (quote3, male): When facing the mainland government, in particular, the Hong Kong government became more careful. It does not dare to do anything especially beyond the law, for example, asking mainland China not to export. They cannot do it. Councilor Li says he'll propose an amendment to Hong Kong law that gives the government more power to clamp down on companies that have melamine-tainted products. NTD Hong Kong

i-ACT Day 6: Use Your Power to Protect

Today, Gabriel and Stacey visited a camp where they interviewed a woman who witnessed her husband killed before her eyes. The janjaweed attacked while they were shopping at a market. She fled home, took her seven children and ran towards the Chad-Darfur border. Hear this story in Day 6 video at http://StopGenocideNow.org. Gabriel and Stacey observed the threadbare children and their deteriorating health. They met with Mouna, a young girl who contracted cholera. Being amongst a group of vibrant people stricken with grief, disease and driven from their homes, Gabriel and Stacey confessed how hard it was to keep it together. Read their blogs in Day 6 at http://StopGenocideNow.org. We ask that you use every story we collect to build a case for immediate policy change that will bring this genocide to an end. This is the most powerful evidence you need to convince your legislator that whatever is being done to help the people of Darfur, it is still not enough: 1. Go to http://www.congress.org/congressorg/directory/congdir.tt to find your legislator 2. Call to make an appointment for a visit or leave your message 3. At your meeting or over the phone, tell the stories as you have heard them 4. Tell your legislator you want him/her to vote for any legislation that supports a real peacekeeping force in Darfur that has the mandate to protect Keep these steps in mind as actions in the coming days will focus on communicating with elected officials. Representative Monique D. Davis (D) - Bias against atheists

Illinois State Legislator Monique Davis launched an attack on atheism, calling it "dangerous for our children". She was confronting well-known atheist Rob Sherman Wednesday afternoon 2 April 2008 in the General Assembly as Sherman testified before the House State Government Administration regarding Gov. Rod Blagojevich's oddly misdirected $1 million grant intended for Pilgrim Baptist Church. Sherman told reporters afterwards he "felt like Rosa Parks". Davis officially apologized to Rob Sherman for her unwarranted and prejudiced attack against him and atheism in general. See http://www.robsherman.com for a full account. People have a right to their religions or to reject religion, and the state should be neutral regarding this. (Christian) prayer in public schools and giving state money to (Christian) churches goes against this. Either you give equal time and money to all religions and belief systems or to none. Long live state secularism!

Olympic Torch Travels Through Hong Kong

CHAN: And a small group of protesters came out as the Olympic torch made its way though the streets of Hong Kong today. Eight protesters were detained briefly, while another pro-Tibet activist was labeled a traitor. Here's more from Hong Kong. STORY: Security around the flame was tight with roads closed and crowds kept at a distance. At least 16 security guards in blue and white track suits and police on motorcycles shadowed the torch bearers. The torch route wound through rain soaked city streets and over to scenic parts of the territory. Outspoken Hong Kong legislator Emily Lau, and members of the Frontier Group, wore yellow and shouted above the roar of the crowd early in the day. [Emily Lau, Hong Kong Legislator]: "Hong Kong is still the freest city in China. But we fear our freedoms are diminishing because the government seems to be so frightened, they might be calling up the central government everyday, every hour to receive orders. And people who want to come here to take part in activities have been turned away at the airport, and it's terrible." Other protesters were pushed around by pro-communist supporters along the route. One elderly man faced off Beijing supporters, while he was shoved by a passerby. [Ng Pun-yuk, Protester]: "If nobody in Hong Kong comes out, no one voice out for themselves, Hong Kong will collapse. I stand up not only for them. Apart from Tibet and Dalai Lama, I stand up for myself. I stand up for my conscience. I would be sleepless if I am not here. I will sleep well tonight." Pro-Tibet activist and Hong Kong University student, Christina Chan, was pushed into a police van then briefly detained by police after wrapping herself in a Tibet flag in the pouring rain. [Christina Chan, Tibet Activist]: "I think it's a very dirty trick because I think it was a political decision to remove us ten minutes before torch gets here." From here the torch moves on to the gambling haven of Macau, on its second stop of a tour through many parts of China as the flame makes its way up to Beijing. Experts say the Chinese communist regime will use the China leg of the torch tour to rouse support for the upcoming Olympics in Beijing after a shamefully unpopular world tour.

Erik Paulsen Votes Against Condemning Racist Remarks

Paulsen voted against a House Resolution condemning racist and bigoted remarks made by a Republican legislator who denied certain facts about the Holocaust. Paulsen even defended the legislator during a floor debate over the House Resolution.

Telecommunication Relay Service Funds

Companies of VRS, IP, and relay have no authorization and make a decision about where the telecommunication taxes and surcharges to go. The state is the ones who make an authorization to fund them. I am not sure which is department because they keep on referring me different departments and agencies. It was unusual case for South Dakota to use telecommunication tax and surcharge to pay for qualified babies who will receive free cochlear implant. Someone had mentioned that the Father of Deaf child was a friend of legislator. He had asked the legislator a favor in order to submit the bill for using telecommunication funds and to pay expenses of cochlear implant for his Deaf baby. The bill had passed. The bill said that babies who have no income or cover insurances only can afford the limit amount of money will receive a free cochlear implant. These funds should go to Deaf education, or programs with language (ASL) development and tutor for Deaf children in different subjects, The program will work with Parents and Deaf Children communicating to each other. These funds should not be target to one group in the Deaf community.. A Note: It would be great that we would give our support to people in South Dakota who will work on this case and have this bill nulled, expired or void.

The Reality of Republican Pedophiles - "Suffer The Innocent"

Go USA! ... and a few NEW notable names that came after the making of this video... Republican activist and former chairman of the Christian County Republicans Royce Fessenden pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree child molestation and one count of second-degree statutory sodomy. Republican parole board officer and former legislator Chris Ortloff was arrested for attempting to lure 11- and 12-year-old girls to have sex with him. Republican legislative aide Robert R. Groezinger was arrested for possessing child pornography. Republican legislator Robert A. McKee pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography. Republican legislator Scott Muschany was charged with molesting a 14-year old girl. Republican chief of staff Eric Feltner pleaded guilty to showing pornography to a 13-year old girl. Republican city councilman John Bryan killed himself after police began investigating allegations that he had molested three girls, including two of his adopted daughters, ages 12 and 15. ... and sadly, more to come. Ever notice how the right wing conservatives and religious zealots are so bound to what they are told to believe? They cannot think for themselves, therefore, pent up desires in life are repressed. They live their worthless lives in a lie. These are the same people that try to tell two consenting adults who they are allowed to love. A typical Republican will try to control any vagina and penis, and what is done with them. They breed endlessly, and cannot afford to maintain their offspring. You can have your own beliefs, but cannot force sane adults into doing what you want them to do. If it's not your adult vagina, penis or body, then it's none of your fucking business! They perverts that let out their pent up desires in unforgiving situations. Creating their own controversy and share the spotlight with many notable people running our country. The same pathetic pieces of shit raping our children ... and their own! Keep your children away from Republicans! --- Child abuse is the physical, psychological or sexual maltreatment of children. While most child abuse happens in the child's home, a significant portion also occurs in organizations involving children, such as churches, schools, child care businesses, and residential schools.

i-ACT Day 12: New Year Resolution - Become Their Herald of P

Happy New Year!!! We wish you joy and good health in 2007. We also wish that 2007 will finally bring peace to Darfur. Today Gabriel and Stacey were once again messengers of hope. They greeted refugees and new arrivals who were not yet classified as refugees. Gabriel and Stacey showed them our "From America With Love" videos which are clips of personal messages from people across America telling victims how they feel about the genocide and what they are doing to end it. The videos also included appearances by Sen. Barack Obama, John McCain, scholar Samantha Power and actress Mira Sorvino. Go to Day 12 video at http://StopGenocideNow.org. We're asking that you become a messenger of hope in the New Year by pledging your support for victims. Add 2 things to your list of New Year resolutions: 1. At least once a week until the genocide stops, call your legislator and explain that if he/she votes for legislation that aims to end the genocide, he/she has your vote. Go to: http://www.congress.org/congressorg/directory/congdir.tt to find your legislator. Email iact-info@StopGenocideNow.org if you want us to work with you on talking points. 2. Every time you read the paper, look for coverage on Darfur in the "World" and "Africa" sections. If you find an article, write to the editor about it. If you don't find an article, write to the editor to ask why Darfur is not mentioned in their paper. Email iact-info@StopGenocideNow.org if you want help on writing a letter to the editor. Florida Does It Again!

Presidents and Experience: A Myth? (John F. Kennedy/Lincoln vs. Dick Cheney/Richard Nixon)

In the run-up to what could be the decisive contests for the Democratic nomination, Obama's relatively light political résumé — eight years as an Illinois legislator and three years in the U.S. Senate — continues to be the focus of his rivals' attacks. Hillary Clinton advertises her seven years in the Senate and two terms as First Lady, saying "I am ready to lead on Day One." And the message has gotten through: by clear margins, voters rate her as the more experienced of the two candidates. The fact that this hasn't stopped Obama's momentum doesn't mean he's heard the last of it — not with John McCain, who has spent 26 years on Capitol Hill, the likely Republican nominee. "I'm not the youngest candidate. But I am the most experienced," says McCain. "I know how the world works." Obama's credentials would be an issue in any election year. He would be sworn in at age 47, making him one of the youngest Presidents in history, and would arrive in the Oval Office with less executive experience than most of his predecessors. Depending on what your leanings are, you could compare his work history — lawyer, state legislator, Washington short-timer, orator — to Abraham Lincoln's, or to a thousand forgotten figures in politicalgraveyard.com. The question of experience takes on added bite this year, though, because the next President will inherit a troubled and menacing satchel of problems. From the Iraq tightrope to the stumbling economy, from the China challenge to the health-care mess, from loose nukes to oil dependence to (some things never change) Cuba policy — the next President will be tossed a couple dozen flaming torches at the end of the inaugural parade, and it would be helpful to know that this person has juggled before. But if one moral of the Bay of Pigs is "Beware of charisma" or "Timeworn trumps callow," what do we make of the mistakes and miscalculations of deeply experienced leaders? Franklin D. Roosevelt's failed court-packing scheme, for example, or Woodrow Wilson's postwar foreign policy? For that matter, Kennedy would not have faced such a harsh early tutorial if the venerable warrior and statesman Dwight D. Eisenhower had not allowed the Cuba-invasion plan to be put in motion during the last of his eight years as President. There's something egglike about the concept of experience as a qualification for the highest office. At first blush, the idea appears to be something you can get your hands around. Presidential experience means a familiarity with the levers and dials of government, knowing how to cajole the Congress, understanding when to rely on the Joint Chiefs of Staff and when to call on the National Security Council — that sort of thing. But bear down even slightly, and the notion of experience is liable to crack and run all over. If knowing the system is so useful, then second-term presidencies should be more successful than first-term. Instead, many Presidents lose effectiveness as they go along. Lyndon Johnson, for example: his experience as a master legislator no doubt helped as he steered his historic civil rights and welfare agenda to passage. By the end of two years as President, however, "he was out of gas," recalls Johnson aide Harry McPherson. The longer Johnson was in the Oval Office, the more feckless his presidency became. Was it Franklin Roosevelt's experience as governor of New York that gave him the power to inspire in some of the nation's darkest hours? Or was that gift a distillate of his dauntless battle with polio? To a keen student of human nature, all of life offers lessons in how to lead, inspire and endure. Lincoln's ability to apply useful lessons from his motley experiences was among his most striking traits. When Ulysses Grant explained his grand strategy to defeat Lee by attacking on multiple fronts, Lincoln immediately thought of a lesson in joint operations learned years earlier on the farm. "Those not skinning can hold a leg," he said approvingly. For other temperaments, no amount of schooling, no matter how specific, will do. Richard Nixon served as a Congressman, Senator and Vice President; he watched from the front row as Eisenhower assembled one of the best-organized administrations in history. When Nixon's turn came, though, his core character — insecure, insincere, conspiratorial — led him to create a White House doomed by its own dysfunction. http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1717926-2,00.html

VVH-TV News -- Lyme Disease: Medical Nightmare (Part 1)

Lyme disease -- it has become epidemic on Long Island and much of the New York Metropolitan Area, indeed across the United States. But as bad as the illness has become, so has treatment for it -- health insurers have discouraged long-term treatment for what is often a long-term illness. Suffolk County Long Island Legislator Edward Romaine recently held a public meeting on Lyme disease. Eva Haughie, President, Empire State Lyme Disease Association. She has had Lyme disease for nearly 20 years. Her association is based in Manorville. Dr. Joseph Burrascano, East Hampton, New York He is a pioneer in the treatment of Lyme disease. And because of the push by medical insurers to only cover short-term treatment -- two, three or four weeks of antibiotics -- and Dr. Burrascano having developed a protocol for treating the many people who are not cured in the short-term but have chronic Lyme disease, he ended up being attacked. But he came through it and is regarded as a major leader in the field. Staci Grodin, Co-Founder and President, Turn the Corner Foundation. A Lyme Diseases victim, her Turn the Corner Foundation has raised over $2 million and funded important Lyme disease research. Sandy Berenbaum, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Brewster, New York. She has specialized with working with those with chronic Lyme disease. Her accounts were most poignant, and her explanation of why health insurers balk at providing compensation for long-term treatment most illuminating. Diane Blanchard, President, Time for Lyme. A former resident of Westhampton, where she and members of her family contracted Lyme disease, she presently lives in Greenwich, Connectcut. Her organization, Time for Lyme, focuses on education and research. Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Humayan Chaudhry. confirms how Lyme disease has become "endemic". Suffolk County Legislator Edward Romaine New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr., Sag Harbor, New York who talks about the bill he has before the New York State Assembly requiring health insurers to provide compensation for long-term treatment of Lyme diseases -- a measure that has been bottled up in Albany. Shelter Island Town Supervisor Alfred Kilb, Jr. Shelter Island has long been a particular hotspot for Lyme disease and Kilb describes Shelter Islanders he knows with chronic cases of the disease.
