Melamine in Sichuan Earthquake Relief Packages

ANCHOR: And breaking news, relief packages for Sichuan Earthquake victims have been found to contain melamine in them. Lets take a look. STORY: Victims of the Sichuan earthquake say the Nanshan milk powder they were given in relief supplies was found to have melamine contained in it. Relief supplies were checked by the Chinese General Administration of Quality Supervision Inspection and found to have traces of the toxin. Similarly in Longnan City of Gansu Province, 20 survivors have claimed to have developed kidney stones, linked to consuming the toxin. [Mr. Zhang, Survivor from Longnan]: There is some milk powder, the Nanshan milk powder, which is toxic, and it is being given here. I heard that more than 20 people drank it and then were tested to have kidney stones. Ms. He is one of the many victims in Longnan, Gansu Province. She says many people are still living in sheds. Most of them simply cant afford to rebuild their homes.
[Ms. He, Survivor from Longnan]: The key is that the local officials are too corrupt. Although there were a lot of relief supplies, the officials friends and relatives took most of them. The normal people here didn't get anything. There were many blankets, sweaters, coats and other winter clothing, but we dont know where theyve gone. Earthquake survivor Mr Chen lives in Pengzhou, Sichuan Province. He says villagers here used to make a living from a popular tourist spot. But since it was destroyed in the earthquake, people are unemployed. [Mr. Chen, Survivor in Pengzhou]: We are from the hardest hit area. After the disaster, we did what we could to help ourselves. The road to this area has not even been repaired.

UNICEF: Rebuilding lives in China after the quake

LONGNAN PREFECTURE, China, 20 June 2008 -- Bending over a tiny desk, seven-year-old Zhang Ziwen did his homework in a tent near the Bailongjiang River. "I used to live in the town with my family. But now we can't live in our house anymore," Zhang said. Before the earthquake struck the region in May, Zhang attended all his classes from Monday to Friday. But since the quake, he has been one of the 518,000 students who have limited classes taught in tents or pre-fabricated classrooms in Longnan Prefecture. "I am still afraid of the aftershocks. There is no electricity in the tent at night and I am bit by lots of mosquitoes," he said. "I just wish to go to school every day, as usual."
