The University of Maine at Machias held their 22nd Annual East Machias River Challenge on Saturday, April 26th on the East Machias River. The water was fast and the event, well run and a lot of fun. Every year Machias, Maine, holds its famed Wild Blueberry Festival, complete with pie-eating contest.

A new book :"Images From The Past: Machias Area....Postcards and Photos From A Time Gone By" has just entered a 2nd printing. The book is authored by Michael C. Despite rain on Saturday, the Machias Blueberry Festival could not be stopped. County Wide TV news covered the event as "What Cheer? Brigade" a 19-piece group from Providence, Rhode Island paraded through the entire festival. The annual event draws about 20000 people to the town that has had a population of 2500 for nearly the past 100 years. Machias Seal Island is a summer home to thousands of puffins. It is located in the Gulf of Maine, between the American town of Cutler, Maine and the Canadian Province of New Brunswick. For five nights members of the Centre Street Congregational Church in Machias performed for sold out crowds during performances of this year's musical "Bluefinger or The Blueberry and I". This first clip shows the "Bungee Cord Blues" which shows a use for the versatile tool. The biggest fundraiser for the Machias Rotary Club is the Radio Auction. The event began nearly 40 years ago and was on radio for one afternoon. Now it is on the radio, cable (although some in East Machias reported difficulty getting the TV portion) and for the first time some items were previewed on the internet. Each year the Machias Blueberry Festival attracts almost 20000. The event is held the 3rd weekend of each August by the Centre Street Congregational Church. Over 300 craff tables are available. About 200 people participate in the annual road race, pies and baked goods are consumed, so are lobsters and fish chowder. There are musical performances of all kinds. For 33 years the Machias Wild Blueberry Festival has been held and we have been there reporting the news. In this news video, shows part of a performance on August 14, 2008 at the Centre Street Congregational Church in Machias. The Machias Bay Chamber of Commerce hosts a business after hours each month. In July the event was held at Washington Academy in East Machias. Music performed by the steel drum band "Stix & Steel" was the highlight. A bit of the Caribbean in Down East Maine. Watch for more information on County Wide TV and in Maine Magazine.

Video from our work with the Christian Youth Corps in Machias on teh Eisenhardt project. The two boys (Dalton and Wyatt) have a rare genetic problem. But that does not stop them from helping us! It was a great day. Indeed one of my favorite BonaResponds days.
